Thank you so much for these tutorials! Now I finally get why people stress the importance of value, hue and saturation. I have a lot of trouble with colouring, so your "tips for beginners" was particularly helpful. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Not only was this helpful but you were incredibly thorough in explaining things! I love that you mentioned common mistakes and how to fix them, and then also went another step and brought it down to basics.

Also wicked art!

Those are some really great advice. I have been trying to learn digital painting about a year now, from people like you but some of these color and saturation tricks a new to me. I will definitely think about this in the future thanks.Β

Your art is great, I really like your creatures. Do you have any tips on improving drawings? (besides the obvious practise)

I appreciate the thorough explanations for your process. Like others, I've been trying to figure out how to approach coloring, and this helps a considerable amount. I can't thank you enough!

I can't thank you enough. I took a stab at coloring today, and it came along a little more quickly than usual. Your pointers on color schemes were especially illuminating and I feel awful for discarding any knowledge I had on the color wheel from way back in junior high school. Take my heartfelt thanks!

This is a great description. Do you have any advices for traditional painting with coloured pencil?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Zhrayde In reply to Crystal-Firefly [2013-07-12 14:16:27 +0000 UTC]

Judging from your gallery, you're already using colored pencils very well. The biggest thing about using colored pencil is layering different colors to create new colors since you can't mix them like you can with paint. I can see your already doing this in your drawings. I didn't talk about color mixing in the tutorial, but you will need to read up on a this a little to understand how to layer color. For instance, if you have a red dragon and you want to make the lights warm and the shadows cool, you can add blue to the shadows first and overlay that with red. This way the shadows are more purple and lights are more red (alternatively you could just use purple and layer red over too, it depends on the effect you want). What you are able to do with colored pencils is limited to which colors you have. The fewer colors you have, the more creative you'll need to be. But overall, the techniques are the same as in the tutorial, just with a different medium.

I hope this helps!
