File is too big otherwise....
This is a piece I have wanted to do for ages, though perhaps with another horse as main. But... I think this fits better in my stable story atm.
So yeah, a tribute to two wonderful stallions, I have loved for ages: Coldalo'naj and his father Najord of the Heavy Storm. (Fun fact: Ascot is Cold's halfbrother and Najord's son.)
And perhaps even more to their owner who I admire immensely for her talent: Naxaron
So, now that I'm done with my self imposed torture... (you have no idea how many stripes I did... -.-')
Extra's will be linked in the coming days.

With a soft pat on the shoulder, she steered the stallion towards the arena. Warm-up had looked like hell to her. Iluska had been there, not really surprising, but the more she saw her, the more she started to dislike her. She had heard enough stories from others and the look she had given her when Alex had arrived with Ascot had told her she wasn't too keen on seeing an Icogan, official or not. It was almost a relief to be able to leave to the main competition arena and leave the other riders who were awaiting their turn behind her.
Ascot snorted softly. Since obtaining the stallion, he hadn't really calmed down and the muscle mass that he had build with more regular training didn't really help to make him more manageble. The only thing that seemed to help was regular exercise. No matter what, the animal was beginning to become a powerhouse, but one that still needed a lot of training. Not that she really cared, she liked the animal, even if he wasn't the friendliest horse around. "It's alright." She stroked his neck for a moment before halting just before the ring. It wasn't really her time to ride yet, but she would at least not be far off when that moment came.
While the previous rider exited, she collected her reins, immediatly feeling Ascot tense beneath her, knowing something was about to happen. "Easy boy..." If there was something that she had learned from riding him, it was that he was sensitive to what happened around him and easily picked up the smallest change in his rider. He was no horse for a novice, unless they wanted flying lessons instead of lessons in horseback riding.
Riding up to the arena, she looked up for a moment, saying a silent prayer that everything would go well before pressing her heels down and making a round to wait for her signal to start.
The moment she entered the arena, she felt the nerves rise anew. What had happened over the lasts couple of months was still fresh, and somehow, it hurt to do this without her father and her brother. She had always said that she wanted to make her debut in a major show when her family was present and now she was all alone, having cut ties completly and having no clue how things were back at Vaux. Her doubt seemed to make Ascordias uncertain for a moment, almost making her miss her stop to greet the jury, even if they were on a bit of a strange side of the arena in this case. Adapt, right?
As she pressed her heels down again to send the stallion forward once more, it was with some more confidence, but not really much. The work had only begun and though she knew the figures by heart, it was almost as if she could hardly remember them, doing everything more on muscle memory then anything else. Luckely, Ascot was more in the here and now than the airhead on his back, otherwise it would have been a disaster from the start.
With each movement they made, Alex felt her confidence grow. It was perhaps not the way she had wanted it to be, but at least she could do it. She could prove that she could ride, that Ascot was not some painted curiousity that had no place among champion horses, that even without an official studbook a horse could accomplish something, just like that you didn't need to have a fancy stable to be a good rider like herself.
Tempi changes, half-passes,... Even the first passage went relatively well, especially considering that she knew from experience that Ascot was rather a horse that wanted to move forward then collect when she asked him to. It was not easy, but today he seemed to respond to her commands anyway. As she jumped to canter, she noticed a shift in the air, but didn't really react to it at that moment.
As she came back around for her second round of changes, she knew she was not imagining things. From the corner of her eyes, it was as if she could see a horse next to her, but it could not be there. This was a test alone and Ascordias didn't seem to react one bit to the strange happenings, not even when it felt like the temperature around her dropped a couple of decrees, as if someone had left the freezer open and a cold wind blew over them. And just as she thought she could see what was happening beside her clearly, it was gone.
A small frown knitted itself between her brows, but there wasn't really much time to think about it. The competition went on and she couldn't afford to miss a single beat or make a miss-step because she was disctrated. For a moment, Ascordias could show that he loved more to go forward than to collect as she came to the extended canter before she had to reign in the stallion once more for the remainder of the test.
When she was almost finished, she thought she smelled the sea. Or was it rather a small mountain creek, running along between the rocks? Ascordias had just almost made a huge fuss as she was asking for the last couple of movements, alas for him, all collected ones and he was almost at the end of his rope with them. Alex felt it, in the way he started to behave under her. It was just when she thaught he had really had it, that he seemed to settle down, like the sea after a storm. And from the corner of her eyes, she saw why. A faint blue shimmer moved beside her, almost mimicking her movements, but not quite. But the horse was different, not as substansial as her own stallion, as if she saw an afterimage of the precious rider, if they had been using a glowing horse that was.
Ascot snorted softly and though he hated passage's,she could feel him come alive, as if he was reacting to something. A soft, almost inaudible neigh replied before she was alone once more.
In a daze, Alex finished, stopped and greeted the jury once more before letting her reins slide to give Ascordias some more space to stretch his neck as they exited the arena to make room for the next rider. In her mind, Alex was thinking more about what she thought she had seen when she was riding, than how she had ridden as she was honest to herself.
While Ascordias stretched his neck, Alex turned in the saddle and looked back to the arena. In the sun, on the other side, she saw to figures standing and looking at her. Two horses, one black with striking white markings on his coat, the other a blue roan with vibrant blue ones. Her breath hitched as she saw them, pulling on the reins out of reflex to halt her mount, but as she blinked, they were gone.
A lump formed in her troath. She had not been alone and if she remember correctly, she even knew who those two were. Biting her lip, she bowed down to stroke Ascot along his neck, before giving him a hug. Her big, grumpy stallion looked back for a moment.
"Maybe it's time to call home again." She mumbled softly, as she saw that purple eye look at her. "I think your dad and brother wanted to tell me something." A faint smile lay around her lips, despite the tear trickling down her cheek. "I guess we're never alone, no matter what happens."
Ascot responded with a soft snort before slowly walking on, as if he planned to bring her personaly to her phone.
