Description Howl's Moving Castle illustration directly influenced by the movie this time. I don't remember him turning into a monster in the book?

The characters are drawn in the way I see them, in the same-ish way they appeared in my previous illustration:

Enjoy!

The lighting is looking pretty good once again! I think the piece would be stronger if you had a faster falloff though (i.e. his back legs are almost black in shadow). So you know, a lot stronger of a vignette, which would get rid of some of the more unnecessary information, like the back caves. The floor being the same color as the wall kind of ungrounds them.

Personal opinion, I think these would look SUPER awesome if you did it as a paper collage rather and then used photoshop to fix what you want.

Hope I wasn't harsh!

But ya, if you don't want to basically black off a third of your image I'd understand, I hate to work hard on stuff just to "destroy" it lol.

Thank you! Ill give the stronger vignette thing ago, I defo agree with that. And wasn't too sure how to do the floor, but i dosent work quite well as it is, like you said. Ill have a fiddle

Id love to do it properly but I dont have the patience to cut it out =S Plus Id have to be relying on paper colours, and there arent any good paper stores around here. But I would love to, maybe Ill play around with some more proper stuff in the summer!

And you're not being harsh at all! The feedback is really positive and really helpful indeed!

Good deal! It's always that little bit extra that turns a piece from something "good" to something "outstanding!"

Haha, I don't blame you. I LOVE to do collage stuff, but hate cutting, looking at getting a die cutter machine to do all the work for me lol.
And as far as colors go, don't let the paper colors dictate the color of your art lol. Once it's in photoshop, screw with the colors all day long and make it what you want! Add extra effects on top of it, etc. With today's technology, mixed media is becoming the most outstanding looking! You get to keep real texture, plus add glowing bits (or w/e) that never would have existed!

I'd love to teach art if you haven't noticed by all my critiques lol. My teachers were pretty good, but all had this issue with being biased to certain styles. I tend to feel that I can look at art of all calibers, from people who have extensive knowledge as yourself, down to people who've never drawn, and make them a better artist than they were. Also, I can do the same style-wise. Ex. I'm not going to tell a cubist artist to draw more realistically lol.

I must admit.. I have never thought of cutting paper things out, and then editing colours digitally! It seems so obvious now! lol
Id love to have a go at playing with a layered collage design on Ps, i guess I like to keep things moslty traditionally rendered if im working like that, but I should really combine more trad and digi techniques!

I hate how art is so subjective, and it must be hard to teach without letting taste get in the way. But you seem to have it covered well!
Thank you for the compliment about having extensive knowledge too! hehe!

Haha no prob!
I think that's how most inventions are and etc. It's like right under your nose, and then when someoe FINALLY sheds the light, it all clicks! And then you make a masterpiece!!!

Yaa it's wayyyy subjective and I'll take that as a compliment lol.

totally off subject, but if you like your images to look cinematic, I'm starting to do my own stock. Only got some archery ones up right now though. Some of them are bleh, but I think he most are quite different!

Haha lets hope so! I always experiment lots over the summer so I could make something good of the proper paper collaging.

I saw some of your stock the other day and was thinking, 'I know where to do for archery stock!' I might have that as part of some of my summer experiments, doing more drawings from reference trying to get more action into pictures

Experimentation is always nice!

Haha, really? That's funny. Yaaaa, I do 10 times better AT LEAST when I draw from reference!

I dont know why some people just dont use references... As long as it isnt just a straight copy of something, then looking at a real life example of something can really help the work.
I think some people are scared its copying, but its not if you use it as a guide and not just draw over things

Yaaa, this is true!

Honestly though, as an illustrator, nothing is really cheating if it helps you achieve better results, I've most definitely traced something verbatim before, but it didn't look the same and I put it in a different environment. That's just how I think though lol.

It does just really depend on how the tracing is being used and the intended outcome. For tattoo artists, tracing is invaluable! hehe

True! I like to trace out objects in Illustrator as well. Makes life a heck of a lot easier than free-handing the pen tool lol.

actually he never did turn into a monster in the book.
Hayo mayozaki(i know i spelled it wrong. so sue me)) put that in to cut other parts from the book out, curiously.

Yeah, I thought not.
He played around with the story so much, but his version is still very cool indeed! It makes both versions stand out in themselves which is good.
