Description
Her Rhapsody
12 x 17 in sheepskin lith print
2007

This was an homage to an old Japanese surrealist, Kokoro Dash. She made woodcut prints and various other types of prints of her hometown made with materials on her fathers estate. When she was happy, her prints were colorful with blossoms, blue waters, and green gardens. When she was sad her prints were covered in blood and stained with tears. She took her life in that estate, and in the Japanese tradition she was a moon without a star. She was beautiful, everyone knew it and her passing was an event that transcends social interaction. Her death was celebrated as she wanted to find her star, and who is anyone to tell her where to find it? A beautiful story that I will tell my daughter one day when she is afraid.

I get so easily enamored with cultures I will never really understand, and in Japan I fell instantly in love. I will probably end the majority of my life there with my wife, and just knowing that I will be where I am most happy, reminds me of Kokoro. When she was happy the world knew it, without ever seeing her face or hearing her voice, her creation was emotion.

I am being such an emo toot lately! Idno, I have really found some much needed motivation to return to what I do best, and that's to create.

I am sorry again since this is not the final print, it's sometimes difficult scanning or making digital copies of prints made on very textured materials, and every time I scanned this the only thing that really showed was the leather pattern, so this is the lith print before application on a sheepskin prepped base.

Beautiful picture. There is a face there it seems.. a sad face. At first I thought it was manipulated. But upon closer look I was amazed. The story behind it is nice too, a bit tragic but nice.

two things I like about this photo: the vague lower part of a face that I see in it and the look of a stellar cloud. precious!

I'm visiting Japan next year for a conference, and am really excited about going there. Living there must be a very different experience of course, but I'm dying for a taste of the life there.

I love your homage. Boiling, churning, soft textures. It's like milk dripped into water before it mixes.
So is it sad or happy?

The conference is in Sapporo, but I'd love to visit Tokyo and Kyoto too

That's an amazing story. Thank you for sharing it.

It looks like there's a woman's face in the clouds, and the noise reminds me of the stars you mentioned.

I feel very inspired now. I want to put more thought and emotion into each thing I create. It's a hard thing for me to do with photography right now, but perhaps I should get some oil paints this summer and follow my heart.

I feel that way about a city near here: Victoria, British Columbia. I felt so at home and happy there, and I feel sick being away from it. No one really understands, but somehow I know I need to be there.

I'm also enamoured with Paris. I've never been there, but I've read so much history and literature that took place there. It's so old. I think it would be spiritual taking a historical tour. I just fear having to leave after I go there. I will probably have an emotional breakdown. Sometimes I look at pictures of France and cry because I feel like I'm a part of that place somehow. I don't know why. :/

I know what you mean - sometimes I think the photos I take of art don't really capture it. Try, but its better to see it in the real. I wish I could see yours, but I doubt I'll be able to anytime soon . I think it has something to do with the scale, perhaps - something thats a screen size picture could actually be 7 feet square and that is lost with out a referance, like a person in the picture or something....but I can't think of a way to scan big stuff, so pictures.

I'm not sure whether everybody has some kind of strange feeling when he flies just a few meters above the clouds. They are so majestic and yet it is so difficult to capture that feeling and till today I didn't know how one could make this work. Well here's the solution a simple lith print on sheepskin, if anyone told me that before I'd probably have laughed at him.

Have you tried just photographing it instead of scanning? You know, so you could control the light that was hitting it.
Idno.

I really like this, and I'm glad you're back to work!

I have tried photo shots, but they look bland, usually show no texture, and nothing looks good. Both ways really make it look boring and sickly.
