After many many attempts, I finally got the lineart to a point where it was tolerable. The Homunculus Lust form the anime Full Metal Alchemist, with possibly more in the series to follow. Though the rest are going to be hard to do without spoiling the show haha. Can you tell I really like the series?
Pensils and inks on paper, colours in Photoshop 5.5. The background entailed a search for gothic, newspaper masthead font, which was easy to find once I knew what I was looking for. Then the rest was done with various blending modes, opacity changes and masks (more time consuming than the cheacter itself!). I hope it worked.

Thank you! It's a variation on how I used to colour hair, which made it look a bit flat and uninteresting. Glad you like it! I think I'll stick with this method and work from there.
