Facebook is correct in having sex be male and female - though they could use intersex. They really need a gender section - which would accommodate most people.

I think they should have an "unspecified" option, at least, for those of us who don't want to be telling everyone what's between our legs. Even with the do not show option, they still use pronouns in accordance with your listed sex, rather than the plural. (I know the plural is technically incorrect, but it's widely accepted and much more common than ze/hir.)
If anything, perhaps it would be more appropriate to have gender instead of sex. Most people use them interchangeably anyways, and wouldn't mind the change. They could include "other" and "unspecified" options.

At least they have the option 'don't display'.
I doubt they'd include 'intersex' as a third option, however. Knowing some people, they'd use it as a joke. Even 'other' or 'unspecified' would be nice though.

But even though they have the "don't display", it will still use pronouns in accordance with the sex you chose, whether you like it or not. I don't expect them to take up ze/hir, but using the plural (technically incorrect, but widely accepted) would be nice. I definitely think there should be an "unspecified" option.

I'm pretty sure my Facebook calls me 'they'.
Though now that I check it I'm not sure...

I think they used to let you not tell them, but by the time I signed up, you HAD to choose one. I was not pleased.

For me as well. I found it and, yep, I still have 'she' written all over things.

Mmm. I chose male just to be spiteful, but it really bothers me that I had to choose at all. >|

To my knowledge tere was a HUGE petition last year to get "FTM", "MTF" and "anfgroganous" (I can't spell, sorry) added to facebook. They got a LOT of signatures, but I haven't heard anything about it since :/

I had heard vaguely about that, but I wasn't on facebook at the time, and when I looked for something like that just now I couldn't find anything. :/

Maybe they're under the impression that there aren't enough people who are transgendered or bisexual (insert other sexualities here) to bother changing it... I'm not defending them or anything but Facebook seems to be made by really dense people.

You can check off "women" and "men" if you want to, so they at least acknowledge bisexual people.
It's quite likely that they don't think there are very many gender-variant people out there. But I think it's also possible that they are quite aware, but there are right-wing organizations pressuring them not to acknowledge us.
Regardless of their motivations, I think something should be done about it.

If they gave the option, I'm sure more people would use it.
