My entry for =Nayelis 's contest. I was given three words and an image, and had to create a character based on them. My words were swift, steely, and gritty, and my image was avocados.

I tried to push myself to create a more visually complex character because at times I feel my designs are too simple. So MARKINGS.

Though in my description below I say "he" over and over, it's merely a grammatical thing. Enso has no apparent gender, and I would rather not belittle him with "it".

Info: Enso is an extremely sentient and intelligent creature born of the trees. Though gentle in personality, he is generally wary of all but his native neighbors. Though he is able to comprehend any language (or at least the jist) he is unable to speak or vocalize in any way. He is able to communicate with the receptive by non-verbal telepathy.

Though only the size of a squirrel, Enso is able to take the form of any size of living creature. However, much to his distaste, no matter his form, his markings and "eyebrows" remain intact. He finds it difficult to blend in.

The darkest greens on Enso's body are semi-hardened areas of his skin, creating natural armor. His course, inflexible mane also acts as armor, protecting his neck. His head, the only brown-colored part of his body besides his tail, is the hardest part of his body (both physically and emotionally, of course). The green markings on his face glow slightly.

Since Enso has no thumbs, he uses his tail to touch, grab, and hold things. He also uses it to grip foliage while climbing. When on the defensive or running, he can curl his tail tightly to keep it out of the way. The membrane adds extra protection.

Backstory: Enso was born of the trees, alone. For many years, he was unaware of the existence of other shape shifters. However, there came a time when he came face-to-face with another of his kind and was annoyed to discover that his inability to transform without his visible markings was unusual. He became very stubborn and resists the ridicule of his kind by avoiding contact with them. He lives in his own private forest, and maintains its borders.
