A rope and a torch attached to it.
Fenja might seem shy when you first meet her, but after talking with her for a while she starts getting more confident. When socializing she tends to keep a calm attitude, but can be very stubborn at times and get very confrontative if something annoys her. If the situation demands it she will get physical and fight. She doesn’t mean to, but when talking with hares and birds she might be a bit condescending. Unless you're a fox or a wolverine, her trust won’t be hard to earn, as long as you give her a good first impression. But betray her once and you will most likely never have a second chance with her, since she tends to hold grudges. Fancy words and manners are not her speciality, but not to the point of being rude. She has a very high sense of responsibility and sometimes can come out as a workaholic, but she will never doubt to drop whatever she is doing in order to help someone in need.
History:
Childhood:
Fenja was born on the outsides of Midcairn. Her father Skógur was a miner in one of the biggest jewel mines and took a lot of pride in his job, since it was vital to keep the land’s safety and his ancestors had been doing it for generations. He was a very strict but loving parent to Fenja and her older brother Arnórr, and made sure to teach them about the value of hard work and how important it is to help each other. But he also held the belief that reindeer were the only worthy creatures in the alliance. After all, he would say, not only were they the first animals in it, they also were the biggest and strongest creatures in the Sanguine Lands, doing most of the hard labors that kept the community alive. Accepting useless hares and birds in the Tunturi was ridiculous, and letting foxes and even worst, wolverines run among them was just crazy. He would often complain about carnivores being disgusting for eating corpses and warning his children of how easily a wolverine could kill and eat a calf.
He had other more happy stories to tell though. Every night he would gather his children to tell them all kinds of legends before they went to sleep.
Fenja’s mother Edel was a bard who had traveled a lot before settling down in Midcairn with Skógur. The town was very quiet, not the best place to be a musician, but her husband earned quite a lot in the mines and since her priority was having a family she didn’t mind if her music wasn’t so well received there.
She loved her husband but hated his attitude towards other animals and tried to convince her children that all creatures have something good within them. She would tell them stories about her travels and the wonderful friends from all species she had made. Fenja and Arnórr loved this stories and dreamed of knowing all the places their mother talked about.
Unlike her father, Fenja didn’t think of hares and birds as useless, she recognized they were capable of things that reindeer could never do. But she couldn’t stop seeing wolverines and foxes as dangerous, even though her mother and brother tried to teach her otherwise.
Fenja wasn’t good at socialising so she didn’t have many friends growing up. She would spend most of her time near the mines keeping company to her father while he worked. At first Skógur didn't want the little fawn playing in this place since it could be
dangerous, but she knew of to keep away from trouble and sometimes she even helped gathering some small gems his father accidentally dropped.
Arnórr never liked doing physical work. Instead he spent most of his time practicing music with his mother or playing with his friends. Skógur was disappointed his son didn’t want to follow the family tradition but when Fenja started showing potential for the job, he stopped worrying so much for Arnórr and even tried to support him, although once in a while he would make some harsh comments about it. The two of them never got along really well, and Arnórr was worried that living there wouldn’t let him or his sister be happy.
Fenja wasn’t really interested in mining, she only accompanied her father to feel like she was being helpful, but when she started getting bigger Skógur decided he would begin educating her on the business. He spoke to her about the different gems and how to extract them, and every day he would tell her what a big responsibility it was to gather the gemstones in order to maintain the Artifact and how all the creatures in the valley relied on the miners for this. Skógurr was so insistent about this that Fenja couldn’t stop thinking about what a catastrophe it would be if she didn’t gather enough gemstones. The belief that everyone depended on her work stressed the young calf and even if she didn’t want to, she accepted her destiny would be in the mines.
Seeing his sister was getting so anxious, Anrórr tried to take her away from their father whenever he could and help her have a more healthy childhood. He encouraged her to make friends and play with other animals and to forget about the responsibilities she still didn’t even had. Slowly the fawn started to relax and spend more time playing and less time with her dad. Arnórr even suggested her that she could be something else, maybe a messenger or a farmer, anything she wished. After all, there were enough animals working on the mines.
Teen:
When Fenja became an adolescent, Arnórr decided to start living as a travelling bard. This decision came as a surprise to nobody, but what none expected was that he would invite Fenja to go with him. Fenja was shocked by this proposal, but deep down she also wished to travel. Before she could say anything Skógur stepped in, furious at this idea. A big argument broke between the two stags and no matter how much Fenja and Edel tried, they could not calm them down. This ended up with Skógur kicking out his son and forbidding his daughter of seeing him again.
Of course Fenja and her mum were mad at Skógur, so much that they wouldn’t even to look at him in the eyes. After a few days of tension and silence, he could take it no more and tried to go looking for his son. He first looked in all of Midcairn, asking every animal if they had seen Arnórr, but none had. When there was none else to ask he decided to go looking around other towns. He tried to go to Whalecall first since it was the nearest city.
After a few days walking under heavy snowstorms and blizzards he was attacked by a trespassing Dhourog. A group of soldiers that were hunting the monster arrived just in time to save him and take him home, but he got hurt so badly it was a miracle he still breathed.
Although they never fully forgave him, Fenja and Edel reconciled with Skógur.
He was in a very delicate state and needed lots of medicine and care. Despite him not wanting to receive any help and insisting he just needed a few days to rest, Edel called an owl doctor to heal his wounds and broken bones. He was told he would need many weeks to heal and even after that, he would probably never be able to walk properly again.
Because of this Fenja started working at a very young age. She didn’t want to go near the mines anymore and picked a job as a lumberjack instead. Her mother spent half of
the day looking after Skógur and playing her drums the rest of the time to get some extra money for his medicines.
Skógur became very bitter after this. He hated having to be cared for by others, it made him feel like a burden. The doctor was right, even when his wounds and bones healed the reindeer could barely move. His front legs hurt when he used them and one of his back legs was totally stiff. Not being able to work or do anything productive, he started getting more depressed every day. He and Edel would argue often, about Arnórr who never came back, about how little Skógur appreciated what Edel and Fenja did for him, about all the things they shouldn’t have done or said. Fenja would work way longer than she should and come back home very late at night, hoping to avoid most of her parents arguments.
Adult:
Nowadays Fenja keeps occupying most of her time with her job and helping her parents get through. She is building a small shack in the woods with the help of some hares. Her parents still don’t know this and she doesn’t want to tell them but her decision is final, she needs to live on her own, though she doesn’t like the idea of leaving her parents. Since Skógur and Edel don’t argue as often anymore it won’t be so bad for them.
They haven’t talked much ever since the incident with Arnórr, but she still loves her father and it breaks her heart seeing him so angry and miserable. Fenja and Edel try to help Skógur get up and walk a bit everyday. Sometimes this helps him get a bit more joyful, sometimes it reminds him how weak he is now and he gets frustrated.
She gets to travel once in a while on her free days, but only to Whalecall or Hollowreach since she can’t go away for too long. She wishes to be a merchant or a messenger some day so she will be able to know more places and maybe, just maybe, have the chance to come across Arnórr again.
