I don't know why, but every time I use Vray lights only I get this problem. If I combine them with other lights, the double faces are gone. This scene uses Vray lights exclusively, no standard or photometric lights. I even used Brute force as my primary GI engine to reduce the effect as mush as possible, I also fixed it to some extent in Photoshop, but still...
3DS Max doesn't detect double faces in this hair mesh and doing it manually is almost impossible. I tried a lot of things and settings, but got nowhere with this problem.. so far...

No, I didn't. I tried to attach all hair meshes into one and let Max try to detect them using STL Check modifier but it didn't. I didn't even try to delete double faces manually.
You should have seen the original render before editing it in Photoshop. The double faces ruined the hair..
