You could try and get to know this one, who has a team of trained people who've made it their life's work to keep him safe and happy, instead of trying and inevitably failing to do all of that for a wild animal yourself.
In my experience if you try and learn how they communicate and what they communicate, even if you can't quite figure it out every time, sooner or later they'll realize you're listening and start to take an interest. For cats in particular, find out if they have a name -- if cats have to be called something they prefer it to be something unique to them rather than "a [type of cat]"; and I've seen that they can usually tell the difference.
