That figure clad in forest-fern, in dappled light and moss,
I met their eyes, one moonlit night, while on a lonesome walk.
We hesitated, both of us, prey and hunter both,
Then I fled, a startled deer among the woodland growth.
Since that night, I cannot speak of what I saw and heard.
That figure, tall as redwood, strong and strange and blurred....
I cannot say just why I ran. Indeed, it was not fear -
But longing, longing evermore
To always have them near.
