I HAS ACHIEVE BANKAI >Domg its FINALLY DONE. so much work went to making this, but im extremely pleased with the results. i really like how the baboon skull turned out, as well as Zabimaru's head. i debuted this at the SF Cherry Blossom Festival Cosplay Contest, and was one of the 4th place winners (first time placing!). if you're going to be at Fanime, I'll also be bring Hihio Zabimaru with me (look for it on sunday).

well I haven't really decided if I'm bringing it - I already am toting a huge prop down with me (cosplaying as Noitora with the scythe one of the days, and the blade by itself is almost 6ft long), and I'd feel bad hogging a bunch of space in my friend's truck XD but we'll see

I'm sorry, but I have no intention of ever selling Hihio Zabimaru or the bankai costume - I put way too much effort into it to even fathom a price tag for it.

Wow! That is so amazing. I'm gonna attempt a Bankai Renji cosplay /eventually/, and this was my inspiration to even attempt it. If you don't mind my asking, what sorta of materials did you use for well....everything?

as for what i made it out of:
head:cardboard, paper mache, foil
torso: tomato cage cut to size
spine sections: frozen yogurt tubs (first 2), the rest are plastic planters
handle: paper mache over foil
and the rest is fabric, super glue and hot glue, and lots of masking tape
thats basically it (won't go into construction as i like to keep that a secret). best of luck when you do attempt yours!

Oh, that's really really helpful. I've got a better idea now of what the heck I'm doing, thanks. I know it's gonna take forever to try, but I'm feeling pretty good about it. If it isn't a big trade secret or anything, what did you use for the tattoos? I'm considering different stuff (ie, eyeliner, paint, etc.) but I'm not sure what'll work well.

you're welcome ^^ i will say though give yourself plenty of time to work on it, BANKAI Zabimaru will take a while to put together. but i'd love to see how yours turns out ^^
as for the tattoos - i've experimented with a lot of different things, and what i've found out to work best is liquid black eyeliner. it works wonderfully, doesn't smudge at all, and to make sure it doesnt i seal it with makeup sealer (or sometimes hairspray if i don't have any on hand, actually works well lol).

had i had more time to work on it, i would have loved for it to have a movable jaw. theres a tomato cage that i used as a frame for the inside of the red mane and the first section of the spine, and the part that im holding on to is the top of the cage, right under the jaw.
if i ever make it with a movable mouth, i want to somehow put in a speaker inside it so when i open the mouth it will make roaring sounds XD

Wow - that is incredibly hard-core! I love it ~ that would be awesome if you could make it roar... I think you can get those smaller speakers and record your own thing at the "Build a Bear" stores, that might help!
I just love the large props, it's so excellent to see - I am very much in envy of people who can build things like you have here!

I'm glad you like my Zabimaru so much! its actually only the second prop I've ever made (first was the shikai Zabimaru XD). I really learned a lot while constructing it

aw thank you! i know with the costumes i want to do, i see big props becoming common in my future XD definitely true about what you said, how cosplay sometimes totally throws a curve ball at you and you gotta be creative with materials. like the head section and first two spine sections for zabimaru? theres a tomato cage in there and two large frozen yogurt tubs in there also XD saw them at work and thought they could work XD yay for free materials
