From comment tag! My tag-word was "purple", so I chose this piece because of how integral purple is to this piece -- it's everywhere!

So I like that the golden yellow eyes contrast with the purple to make them stand out more. Very good use of complementary colors. Her gave is pretty intense as well, with stern eyes and stiff eyebrows. Nice detail on the freckles! Her hair looks quite good as well and I like the random straggling strands...

... though I feel like the strands of her hair could be a little more defined. I feel like her nose and lips are on a little crookedly when compared to her eyes, making her face a bit lopsided. Her ear doesn't quite look like a legitimate human ear, so I'd recommend looking up reference pictures to do your ears before you freestyle it. Going back to her nose for a moment, I think we can see too much of her right nostril, which only exacerbates the lopsided problem I mentioned earlier.

I also think that the zipper on her jacket could be more defined. And perhaps her jacket should have some texture. Right now, I can't decipher what sort of fabric it is (leather, cotton, some other material?). Finally, the edges in her wounds make the wounds inhuman, like they tore through fake skin. The black lines inside of her wounds as well as the bright highlights on the outer portions just don't look natural. Adding a little extra blood to them could've been a nice touch as well, since the wounds look pretty fresh.

There's some great detail in the eyes and on the lips. I like that the background is simple; it ties together the rest of the purple throughout the piece. Using pleasant hues and shades of purple as a focal color works well here (plus purple is my favorite color so I'm a bit biased).

Overall, a good piece with lovely colors. Very nice dark lines and heavy shading -- the style pulls everything together well. Great work! ^^

Now it's your turn! Go to 's gallery and comment on a piece using the tag-word "existential". Have fun!

A very good job! I don't know much about the character so I won't comment anything on accuracy or the like. I'll just try and give a critique on the actual art itself. I very much like the use of purple in the palette, and the way that emphasizes her yellow eyes. I think if you made it a bit more yellow, or perhaps used some more yellow tones in the shadow, I think it would make the palette more effective, and the piece really pop. A story that my teachers always told me about this was that, when watching the demo of a professional painter, they used a bit of lime green in the mostly reddish palette of a human girl, and the whole face really popped. Something to keep in mind! Another comment I have is that it would aid in making the piece feel a bit more real if you used a bit lighter of a base color for the hair, allowing yourself to make shadows. The minimalism is interesting, but judging by the details , I assume you were trying for a semi-realistic piece. The darkness of the hair, with only highlights, obscures the overall depth of the hair. I also think that hard shadows on the hair to indicate the light source would further improve the sense of depth.

As for more compliments, I really like how you drew the wounds, particularly the bright edge and shadow! It's rare for people to give wounds depth like that, so I definitely appreciate it. I also like how you drew the lips. They really look nice! The shadows on the cheek and the use of colors in the facial highlights is also really, really good!

Overall, I think this is a really solid piece, with maybe some minor nitpicks that could really push the piece to greater heights. Good luck and keep working hard!

thank you so much for this comment, I really appreciate that you took the time to write it. I'm glad you liked this drawing, and the suggestion of using yellow in the shadow is really nice, i may try it next time. And I'm glad you like how I did the lips because I wasn't completely sure about them. Thank you again!

It's no trouble at all! Glad I could help.

Contrasting colors are a great way to draw in the eye in general. The eye loves contrast, in value, in color, etc... it's useful stuff to keep in mind when doodling. X3

You're doing great~ Keep it up!

A great job: The skin looks really great and the little skin pigments make it more lively. The shading suits your style perfectly. The hair is also a great sight.
I can't really see ANYTHING to criticize.

Excellent and judicious use of purple in this drawing--did the Purple Man put you up to it? It's a great pic, and I like how you've captured the world-worn look in Jessica's face.
