Do the constellations in the background have any meaning? ou did you choose them because it just felt right? i'm not really knowledgeable about star mappings and meanings.

Yolte In reply to BemEstranho [2016-12-05 16:55:18 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much for the lovely comment ! Those aren't actual constellations, but ones made by me - I like to play with idea where earth-like and alien-like merge into each other, and the constellations have two different meanings in my drawing - the way each of us can find our own stories in the stars, and the glimpse of the sky above other world in Universe .

I like to think that the constelations might be from another star system, if you move out of the solar system all the constelations would get rearranged as the position they are from the observer would be completely different.

Yolte In reply to BemEstranho [2016-12-09 15:29:03 +0000 UTC]

You're right, it's quite thrilling to imagine that our solar system is just one of the many in our galaxy and our galaxy floats among many other galaxies. Don't know why, but it feels calming.

Well, did you ever seen a fractal? they are almost hypnotic! the universe is a huge fractal, and everything in it acts like a fractal if you look at it from a certain perspective.

Thank you so much ! The animal in the background turned out a bit vague - I wanted to draw a bear, but it really looks more like a wolf (the eye seems too big for a bear ).

You're welcome! Oh yeah, I thought it might be a goose! I looked up the red-breasted goose and wow they are so beautiful! I wish some lived here in Finland too.

Yolte In reply to Kuume [2016-10-27 17:09:34 +0000 UTC]

They indeed are beautiful ! I have seen videos where these geese are being kept (or introduced, I'm not sure) in different European countries, so maybe with time there will be place in Finland where these geese could be seen ! Beside Finland with its beautiful lakes is a paradise of water birds !

Kuume In reply to Yolte [2016-10-27 23:25:20 +0000 UTC]

I read that you can see a few of these geese in Finland per year. Yeah, I don't know if they would fit our ecosystem, but you never know. We have a lot of different water birds, that's true. And maybe you knew, according to Finnish legend the world was created from the egg of a duck...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Yolte In reply to Kuume [2016-10-29 18:57:59 +0000 UTC]

I've heard two legends - one is from Kalevala about Goldeneye and Ilmatar, and the other is about the egg of the pochard. Oh, but I would love to hear much more about both of these legends (beside there were parts in Kalevala I felt I didn't understand properly ), the information I found was enough to increase the interest but not enough to satisfy it .

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Kuume In reply to Yolte [2016-10-30 13:28:09 +0000 UTC]

Oh right, the English name for the diving duck I was thinking of is Goldeneye, thanks. Yeah, I meant the creation of the world with Ilmatar in the beginning of Kalevala and how the egg breaks and becomes the land. I think it's such a beautiful myth - well I believe there is esoteric truth about it too. Maybe you know about it already, but there is this thought in Finnish mythology that the world has three layers: this world, the underworld and the upper world, and they are connected by the river of life and death. Birds, especially waterbirds like the goldeneye and swan are able to dive or swim to the land of the dead, and to fly up into the upper world called Lintukoto ("the home of the birds") where souls rest in between reincarnations in a warm lake surrounded by birch trees and guarded by an old lady. It was believed that migrating birds would go to this peaceful place beyond our world along the Milky Way for the winter (in Finnish it's called "linnunrata", "the way of the birds"). I have read about this stuff at the university, so if you have questions, feel free to ask.
