Description

This pelican chick, or sub-adult, I guess you'd call it was one of the birds that hounded us on the dock on day 1 of our fishing excursions in the Florida Keys.

They learn very young how to beg for fish guts!

The brown pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis) is one of two pelican types that can be found in Florida. This kind of pelican live here year round and are divers. The other sort (White Pelicans) are migratory birds who winter in Florida and hunt for their food without diving.

isn't it though? in a goofy way it's an adorable thing. big slappy feet and that huge pouch on its face - BUT the lil' monster will jump up and steal your hard-earned catch from you in two seconds if you turn your back!

Pelicans are smart, that's why. Creatures with intelligence also tend to have sass.

I noticed that some of the goonies had leg bands on, and I asked our skipper what that was about, if they were tagged for scientific research or something, and if she knew anything about that - the answer was really quite interesting!

Apparently the birds that get caught up in lines and nets and traps and are rescued and rehabilitated by humans at wildlife centers get tagged and released, but their exposure to humans makes them less afraid of people . . . which is why the tagged ones and their young tend to be the ones that come closest to us, and will play lookout for the thief pelicans in their family group who swoop in while we are distracted with them.
