  PEACOCK FUN FACTS

A male peafowl is called a peacock while a female is called a peahen.

They are one of the largest flying birds. Their length (including tail) can reach 5 feet (1.6 m).

Peafowl can weigh between 8-13 pounds (3.6 - 5.8 kilos).

They are omnivores, eating primarily insects, arthropods, amphibians, flowers, and seeds.

Their main predators are tigers, leopards, and mongoose. When they sense danger, they fly and hide in the trees. They spend nights on trees for the same reason.

A family of peafowl is called a "bevy". A group of peafowl is called a "party".

Beautiful and colorful tails are characteristic only for the males. The tail makes up 60% of their overall length.

Peahens choose their partners by the length, width and coloration of their tails.

Peacocks are polygamous (mate with more than one female) and usually form a harem that consists of 2-5 females.

One day old baby peafowl can walk, eat and drink without assistance.

Peafowl live up to 20 years both in the wild and in captivity.

Elvis Presley kept peafowl at his Graceland estate until the peacocks began pecking dents into the hubcaps of his cars.

Peacocks are gorgeous!
Some time ago a saw a peacock strutting his stuff in a park, when he suddenly turned his back to me. That was the moment when I realized that looking at the back of their impressive fan of tailfeathers is as interesting as the colourful front. I just had to take some photos and they turned out very nice.
That was the day I celebrated Peacock Backside Appreciation Day.

Yeah, he knows he's gorgeous!
That loud call is one of the best animal sounds, just like the vocals of a fox.

Isn't that a cute video? You know full well what's coming but we all still go AHHHHH when it happens.

I'm glad you liked it! I will present another well known bird here and include fun facts, waiting until a little closer to Thanksgiving. This must be a big set, if the numbers on it are any indication. I'd love to find others.
