Fen is typically a quiet fellow, having very little to say and often times opting to be the listener rather than the one speaking. However, during the rare times that he does respond he will do so candidly and without reserve as he feels it is best to be honest when interacting with another person. Fen is a levelheaded and placid person by nature, exerting a somewhat relaxed air about him wherever he may be. In hand with this, Fen is remarkably sensitive and gentle in behavior, often doing his best to treat others with a kindness and care that he himself would want to be treated with. To those that he feels closest to he is a very loyal friend and would be willing to do mostly anything for them, should it make the other happy. However, at his core he can be extremely dependent on another person once he becomes attached and is capable of being easily hurt or influenced by them. In addition to this he can be quite the coward, unable to work up enough courage to face uncomfortable or displeasing situations. Due to this he has become somewhat of a recluse, not necessarily because he largely favors a solitary lifestyle but rather that its the most comfortable lifestyle he can imagine thus far. In his eyes it might be the easiest and perhaps the safest route in order to avoid being placed within a situation where he could be given the opportunity to become attached to someone else and result in possibly getting hurt.
Once upon a time, the deer hybrid had been remarkably cowardly when it came to unpleasant situations. However, ever since his arrival in Toffee Town and meeting many new wonderful friends, he has since learned to be slightly more assertive in his actions. Fen still retains his preference for solitude and quiet rather than large crowds of people, but lately he has come to the understanding that having that one special person with whom he feels safest around isn't bad at all...
:: History ::
Nifende grew up on the borders of a small yet cozy village. The Verne family was a family of jewelers and although their little shop required both of his parents to run it, Fen was often allowed by his mother to spend time playing with his elder brother instead of helping out at the store since she believed that he should first enjoy his childhood while he had the chance to. The two brothers were as close as siblings could be, constantly exploring the lush forests on the outskirts of the village or visiting the nearby church to have tea and snacks with the kindly priest who lived there with his son. He had always been a very quiet individual and found that he was much more comfortable listening to his brother talk rather than being the one to lead the conversations. His brother eventually picked up on this and would allow for it, often babying his younger sibling to the point of spoiling him a bit. Fen learned much about life and how to go about it from his brother, as he was a gentle and caring type who would always advise the younger to treat others in the way he himself would want to be treated.
As they got older they eventually moved indoors and spent a major part of their time learning the craft of jeweling from their parents so that they might be able to carry on the family business after them if they wanted it. It was at that time that Fen began to really notice how coldly the villagers would treat their small family, all because they happened to be hybrids instead of humans. It seemed like a rather silly and unfounded reason to him as a child, but was told by his parents to not pay it mind as they were convinced it would blow over if given time. Thankfully, their predictions were right and soon enough they had little trouble with the villagers who happened to visit from time to time. With that, Fen spent the rest of his childhood and early teenage years helping his family or improving on his own skills of the craft. As time passed by, his older brother decided to move away from their small village to pursue a life in the city where he hoped he could find better opportunities for himself as a jeweler. They didn't stop him but instead supported their son with his decision and although Fen couldn't help but feel saddened by his departure he did his best to send his brother off with nothing but happiness for what his future would bring him.
From that point on Fen spent a good majority of his days in the shop, and when he wasn't there he would be in the forests spending his time alone. With the absence of his brother, it didn't take him long to realize how emotionally dependent he had become because of the spoiling he had received as a child. Without him there to act as a pillar of support, Fen became vulnerable and quickly descended into a rather secluded life when not present in the shop. At first he kept to himself out of fear of how others might treat him based on the events from his childhood, but after some time passed he became comfortable alone; at that point he would rather bear the loneliness that came with solitude rather than ever having to experience that vulnerability and fear from before. It was a terrible lifestyle and he knew it, but he simply lacked the courage to make changes on his own. His parents had become worried for him of course, and as Fen reached adulthood the both of them decided something would have to be done. It was almost as if fate had answered their calls, since shortly after they had come to that resolution a curious flier appeared in the mail. It was a call for new villagers for a quaint and cozy little place called Toffee Town and within minutes they had been inquiring with their closed off son to give it a chance. He was a bit wary and unwilling at first, but after a week had passed with his parents offering their support, he was all packed and ready to board the train to his new life. Deep within he knew it wouldn't do him good to continue living the way he had been and well...he couldn't help but to be just a bit curious of the small town. It seemed like a comfortable place to start over.
