Description This game blew my mind when I was a kid. I adored the style as well as the wide variety of weird enemies and bosses. It was a lot of fun to be able to pick between a few different characters who have varied abilities. Plus the whole idea of a game taking place within a dream was just so cool. Later on I found out the story behind this game, and it's very interesting.

I've done a bunch of Mario 2 doodles over the years, but I wanted to create a really solid larger piece as a tribute to one of my favorite old school games. I tried to draw at least one of each enemy from the game. This piece was very complex, and I had to be extremely careful not to mix up the colors in all the areas where lots of enemies overlap.

I used pencils, ink, markers and a gel pen to create this.

Super Mario Bros. 2 debuted back in 1988, so this year marks the game's 30th anniversary.

Super Mario Bros. 2 (USA)
Super Mario USA (Japan)

I love that they called it Super Mario USA for Japan. The original game that they modified was Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic. I'm happy with the version the US received, because I find the real SMB2 to be fairly uninteresting.

I liked it too. My favorite boss is Wart.

Wart and Mouser are my picks, but I feel like all the bosses are fun and well designed.

Damn dude, this is great! I think my only criticism (Which is minor, mind you) is that since it's so cluttered and full of stuff everywhere else that the top left corner feels so empty by comparison. XD

That's true. I wasn't sure if it would be too much to just have every area covered, so I left that space free.

Completely agree. It's also amazing to me how well the game's native style fits your own so well. They perfectly mesh tbh.

Glad to see some old school gaming love on here. I always wondered why the game never looked like the others and until I was older I never knew we got this instead of the real sequel.

Thank you! I was trying to get back to my roots, and touch on some games that influenced my own style.

They could totally be long lost brothers. Wart just needs a giant hammer!

Love it!! Definitely brings back memories. When we were growing up my older sister had a SNES and we played the All Stars version of this game. Would love to get a SNES Classic since her cat chewed through the cord and it's unplayable now. On another note, I'm curious about what kind of paper/surface you used for this artwork? It looks pretty sturdy considering the nature of ink and marker.

Ooo, the All-Stars version is really awesome, and it looks fantastic! I still have a copy of that for SNES, too.

It sucks that you cat messed up the cord- could you maybe find a replacement cord for it, or is it just FUBAR?

The paper I was using for this piece is strathmore illustration board, vellum style. It's thicker and can absorb a lot of marker color, so you can layer the markers nicely while still having some texture and grip to the paper.

My best guess is it's destroyed for good, it had problems even before her cat wrecked it it. She asked me to get her a SNES Classic for her birthday as a replacement, but Nintendo makes them ridiculously rare to find, so I had to give up. Why, Nintendo?!?!

And thank you for the answer! You work with your materials incredibly well.
