Description
Continued from Making Patterns 2
How I make my "gold":
1. Base colour flat.
2. Use basic Pencil brush on very large brush size (depending on your canvas size, anything between 300-800 > creates this grainy effect), and lightly go over the whole shape with the second set of colours (1st light + 1st shadow base > see Making Patterns 2 for colours).
3. Then minimise the brush size (still using the Pencil brush) and go around the edges of the shape with the darker colour and through the centre areas with the lighter colour.
4. Change to another brush that creates tiny parallel lines (mine was called Diagonal Lines, and I cannot remember if this is a basic brush with Clip Studio or something I've imported from the Assets). Create 2 layers: top layer set to multiply but only 50% opacity (otherwise can be too dark), and lower to normal. Use the darker colour for the top layer, and the lighter for the under layer. Then merge into the pattern. Congrats, you've created a thread-like effect on your wee "stitches"!
5. Go to final 2 colours (very light yellow + basic black). Use again the normal Pencil brush (but much smaller brush size), and with the black go around the edges of the shape, while with the light yellow go through the centre areas.
IMPORTANT: do set yourself a lightsource > it helps to keep the shadowy areas in one direction. My brain is sort of pre-programmed to have the light fall from top-left corner, so my shadows fall mainly towards the right while lighter areas go to the left.
6. Final step: use the light yellow and upsize your brush to quite large, create a layer that's set on Overlay, and go over the shape lightly > this creates an effect of "shine". I've experimented with different layer types and the Overlay does this best for my purposes. You may want to use Glow Dodge or Add / Add Glow, or something else.
By now, your basic shape is done. Again, SAVE EACH SHAPE SEPARATELY AS PNG IMAGES! You can use them all later on in different patterns.
And since this is a knotwork pattern, there are areas that go under some parts while others go over > chose which go over and which under. Then erase those parts that go under (really, it just makes it look neater). And of course you'll need to add "shadows" to those parts that appear to go under > creates an illusion of depth.
SAVE IT AS PNG!!! (I'm come across some dumdums who have saved stationary pictures as GIF images > this drives me NUTS!)
And import it as PATTERN. Move your imported layer to the side > and you have your seamless ribbon. Save it again as png, and you have your seamless ribbon pattern, ready for use!
Now you can minimise it or enlarge it to your heart's content...
