Description First of all, sorry if the picture looks a little messy. The final editing I did to her design I did on paintSAI because I was using my laptop and it just didn't come out as neat as when I use photoshop and sadtwfsafsa technology issues

So this was also for my 3D animation class. I just had a colored reference of the character, full body, ect. Just to introduce the character.

After bouncing ideas off of the teacher and classmates, I ended up changing a few things about her.
I made her an ACTUAL kimono with an Obi and not just some weird kimono-like dress that I always draw character in that have something like an obi but being used as a belt and akjfghas dyeah forget that
Parts of the kimono are gray and black striped, which looks really cool. before it was like... squares? idk.
The Kimono used to be gray, but now it's white. Looks a lot more interesting. As a bonus, the teacher said "I think that white represents death in some Asian cultures". Well I hope he's right because that works perfectly.
I designed an actual Obi!! It's cute and pink and (spotted or flowery depending on the picture) which fits her cheery personality perfectly!!
Speaking of Obi and death, the teacher wanted me to add a little something into her character that represents death or a reaper somehow (because Oni is a "ferryman", like Charon in Greek mythology who takes the deceased people onto "the other side") ... so I added a little skull in the back? Isn't it adorable?? ((It's so adorable)).
Last but not least... REALLY long sleeves?Eh, that's only for sake of the model. In her normal design I might get ride of it, it's just that in animation it's good to have your character design NOT 100% SYMMETRICAL because then it seems kind of boring. But then again kimono sleeve paws are cute.

(which is a totally awesome picture)
((and I had to keep re-drawing the kimono because RIN YOU ARE CRAZY I am not putting my 10-year old bby (well kind of) into a dress that tiny))

Your teacher is right; white is associated with death in multiple Asian cultures. For example, in some countries you wear undyed linens while at a funeral and in mourning, and Japan buries their dead with a white kimono. I should point out though that Japan's less strict about the association, because wearing white tends to be about pilgrims and purification, and Shinto allows brides to wear white for their wedding while brides of other Asian countries wear red.

~I'm not sure what the ferryman comment is about though. Maybe he actually meant spiriting people away? (You know, like in the Watanagashi Festival legend in Higurashi)~

I don't think it's that specific. It's just that he thought she should have some more of a hint to death (besides the white kimono) in her outfit because Oni meets up with dead people and helps their spirit move onto the other side (to the world of the dead or whatever) ((actually WHERE they go in the afterlife is not up to her but that's another story))
xDDD

And that's cool, good to know. Now that I've heard it from more than one person I'm more inclined to believe it xD

Oh wait, I get it now; sorry, I'm having difficult realizing you're just talking about the character and now the youkai XD .

~Still, it's made me do some research, and I suddenly came across information on kijo and... Well, suddenly I might have to change Reina's species; kijo doesn't seem to fit her at all ~

Yeah.. her name and species is Oni lol xD
I mean, she technically doesn't have a name (or doesn't know it). She just heard people calling her "Oni" (probably looking kind of freaked out) but then just accepted it as her name ((even though it's a title, not a name))
I think she would like nicknames, though

oh, that's unfortunate. What's a Kijo?

Well, I thought that a kijo could be a witch or an oni, so I always specified Reina was the witch-type, but it seems a lot of sources say they're like a female oni who live in forests, and have a lot of similarities to regular oni, and that just doesn't fit Reina; she's too carefree and wants to go everywhere in the world . I mean, maybe if I decided to give her a ferocious temper it could work, but otherwise she needs to be something else.

Awww, that sucks. I've had to redesign characters like that before, it's a bit of a pain...
But hey, here's an opportunity you make her even better??
