Your teacher is right; white is associated with death in multiple Asian cultures. For example, in some countries you wear undyed linens while at a funeral and in mourning, and Japan buries their dead with a white kimono. I should point out though that Japan's less strict about the association, because wearing white tends to be about pilgrims and purification, and Shinto allows brides to wear white for their wedding while brides of other Asian countries wear red.
~I'm not sure what the ferryman comment is about though. Maybe he actually meant spiriting people away? (You know, like in the Watanagashi Festival legend in Higurashi)~
