Description Well, I just figured I'd show you guys what I do in my current Commercial Photo class... It's been pretty awesome, although this particular assignment is rather hard. We have to use an oldschool 4*5 camera to create a textbook (read "perfect") image of a wine bottle. There is a whole lecture just on how to set up lights and today we spent about 4 hours working on it and we are nowhere near getting it perfect. This was shot during the process just for my personal collection, though there is a ton of mistakes in here

A graphic designer and the person who paid them to make that label would scream. Although after four hours that isn't half bad. Industry standard is to take two days for a wine bottle shoot. Plus 4x5 isn't a piece of cake. Although it does take some amazing images.

Well, I can definatley see problems between the background and the left side of the bottle. Please upload the completed part of this soon. I'd like to see it.

that problem is not even the background but rather the stand for the bottle... we ended up covering it with white cloth, that could be seen through the bottle, so that obviously didnt work either... after that i decided to put a black cloth on top of white cloth, but only behind and on the sides of the bottle... the shot looked much better, although i didnt have time to take a digital version, but i think thats what we will continue with next week... thanx for the comment!

I see your point there. I still think you should do something about the left side of the bottle. It just stands out a bit too much.

awesome lighting, yeah there are some little mistakes to correct, but is near perfection.. if you can manipulate the shot with photoshop the prefection is around the corner.

but you can modify levels or those changes allowed by reuters?

allowed by reuters? im not sure what you mean by that...

the point is, photoshop would be the easy way out and it wouldn't really teach me how to take an actual prefect photo... you know?

oh.. about the reuters thing: [link]
yup, now i got your idea, yeah you're right, to achieve the perfect shot the only thing i know is practice.. in my case i need a LOT.
check out the reuters use of photoshop is kinda interesting.

It looks awesome to me! (But I am only taking Intro to Photography right now, so I wouldn't know of the crazy little details you're learning about.)
Anyway, I looked at it and I thought of how wonderful the light was and the clear texture of the bottle...I'm guessing you're using some direct light, right?

XxMurderdollxX In reply to bundle-w [2007-10-18 04:46:37 +0000 UTC]

there are two lights on each side of the bottle with soft boxes on them and a extra light for the background with a soft screen that goes with that... the biggest point of the assignment is to get the perfect reflections of the light on each side and as u can see we have struggles with that up to this point... we'll see how it goes next week.. good luck with intro to photo though, its fun and not too technical, unlike photo 2 and especially commercial photo... you ARE learning black and white, right?

Wow, Thank you for sharing!
That seems like a lot of work! But it should be kind of fun too. So when you say "perfect reflections" you mean that it has to go all the way, from top to bottom of the bottle?

And yeah, I am learning black and white. And I'm finding it quite technical....at the beginning I was going crazy with the whole aperture/shutter speed deal, but I'm getting used to it. Also, I recently learned how to dodge and burn in the darkroom.

XxMurderdollxX In reply to bundle-w [2007-10-18 06:05:33 +0000 UTC]

haha cool stuff, i dont use dodging and burning so much, but its surely useful... photo 1 is not very technical comparing to photo 2, because you get to learn about zone system (at least i had to), which is more complicated than the most complicated thing u've learned about up to this point

this shot IS a lot of work, but most of it is just getting the lighting to be perfectly placed... and perfect reflections are the ones that go all the way from top to bottom, flawless, except for the very bottom where the bottle usually curves in...

XxMurderdollxX In reply to skullinlove [2007-10-18 04:44:00 +0000 UTC]

well background is actually a little lighter than that, i edited it a little in photoshop, though only minor edits... reflections on the bottle is the whole point of the assignment as we are supposed to get two perfect lines on each side respectively... as you can see, the one on the right is far from perfect and that was our biggest challenge today and going to be next week and probably even the week after that... but i appreciate your comment
