I agree that progressing your art forward is good, but that doesn't mean you have to stop drawing fanart. personally I think fanart is the best way to practice, since you're not messing up your own characters.
As for the picture, this is really good. one thing I would like to mention is that her hair seems a bit glued together. It just doesn't look like it's flowing right for a wind like that. I do think that your coloring is amazing.
