I always found it odd how you never really found any artifacts near the Chernobyl NPP. Wasn't that place supposed to be a treasure trove? (I havn't played the games in awhile so I don't remember the story perfectly, but wasn't that just bullshit made up by c-consciousness?)

I don't think it was one of the C-Con's illusions, stalkers just logically figured "area of the zone where few have ever been before = loads of artifacts".
Far as I remember they were mostly correct, SHOC's Pripyat had artifacts out the hoo-hoo (especially the stadium and around that Monolith-infested building with the statue).
Around the NPP, yeah you're correct there. IIRC the only artifacts you can get at the power plant are crates inside the Sarcophagus, but I always assumed the Monolith reaped the area themselves anyway.
