Description When I played Majora's Mask as a 12 year old I had so many thoughts and ideas about the game, some of which I kept to myself as I had never seen people mention it, and then I saw this amazing video . While I hadn't made some of the connections that this video does (and I feel it can be debated) it just was mind blowing because it makes sense.

So I wanted to draw something, and it seemed appropriate to show Link being thrown back from the blast of the moon falling.

Basically, I love and adore this idea, and it brings out the part of me that loved to discuss and theorize with other fans as I did as a child.

I am not sure about the background...;_; I did several versions, this final one made by following this tutorial , but I had hand drawn something as well. I had also wanted to draw Majora in the back of the blast, but I wanted to focus on Link's death.  I ended up going with my original hand drawn (crap) because it matched my image better.

God, Majora's Mask is always battling for the number one spot for me, and it's because it's so much bigger than the little world that it takes place in.

Art belongs to me, please don't use without permission.

Majora's Mask and Link belong to Nintendo.

I don't know if you heard, but there is a very detailed video which pretty much completely disproves the Link is dead theory: www.youtube.com/watch?v=LxTf5h…

The Link is dead theory is still pretty cool though, it makes Majora's Mask feel darker than it already is but unfortunately cannot be true.

I will have to check this out. I've been a fan of the "Link is Dead" theory video because of how well put together it was, but never "believed" it. About the only part I can say can't really be disproved would be the grief theory aspect. Whether or not it was intentional it fits so perfectly.

No. I love the way they set it up and I can go with their logic, though I feel it is more about the grief that Link feels as a result of what he is and what he has gone through. In the end I believe that Link has to accept things as they are. However, I do believe that, in adulthood at some point (possibly it was triggered by something) that he could not continue on living a "normal" life while carrying the memories that he has. So he goes off into the forest, full of his regrets, never to return.(That is the short, not detailed, version of my theory at least)

The theory video, however, just made you think and inspired me. Not that it was difficult. Majora's Mask is my favorite in the series.

Of course, this is simply the way I see it. I love great and imaginitive theories. So I will definatly check out this video. Thanks so much.

I saw the video, and I don't buy it. I have a few reasons for this. Mainly because of the Hero's Shade. It's confirmed in Hyrule Historia that the Hero's shade in Twilight Princess is the spirit of Link's regrets. That tells me that he came back to Hyrule, but wasn't recognized as the Hero he was. It's just my theory, and the video is a theory as well. I'll stick with my theory, and you stick with yours.

The shade -is- Link, carrying the regrets. Or perhaps that is my interpretation of it. I didn't think he went back to Hyrule, and only because the Hyrule Historia says that his whereabouts after are unknown. HOWEVER! I love that idea that he goes back and wasn't recognized as the hero. It's a very sad sad thing, but no one does remember the events that he went through-so I can see the logic behind that.
The biggest upset for this theory comes from a very simple line in Hyrule Historia which calls Termina a parallel world. Playing the Devil's Advocate, I pulled out an idea I saw on a writer's forum (an author was going to make purgatory a parallel world), however, realistically, a parallel world is not purgatory.

I like, personally, to believe that his end comes after Termina. Termina means end (in both Portuguese and Spanish), and if the grief theory is correct, it could be his own acceptance that his time as the Hero is over and that he cannot go back to the life he once lived. (Perhaps not finding Navi was a huge blow as she would be the only one to share the same memories as him.) He then spends the rest of his life caught in a pretty tough position never finding a place that he belongs, and wanders the woods (turning into a Stalfos) , eventually becoming a shade, regretful that he couldn't pass down his knowledge.

^That's just a very simplified version of some head cannon that I have.

I was just impressed by the video in the end. It trumps all of his other Zelda theory videos (he tries to use science to disprove magic in a world where magic is as real as science...doesn't work imo) and I think PBJGamer is funny. It has sparked debate and just makes you think. My favorite part is that you can use Hyrule Historia to debate both sides. :3

Link accepting that his life as a Hero is over makes sense. I like that. I had the whole wandering through the woods and turning into a Stalfos already figured out after Twilight Princess when I met the Hero's Shade.

I thought being sent back was pretty much garbage. He is a freaking orphan, homeless, has memories that no ten year old should have, and he must bare the burden of them and who he is, alone. WHHHHHY!?

Do you mean being sent back to relive the events of Majoras Mask over and over? I didn't like that either, he needs his friends. Although the Kokiri still thought he was a kid, and didn't recognize him at all in OOT, so if he aged after OOT, they probably still wouldn't recognize him. Im assuming that Saria will know he who is, but other than that, no one else knows who he is. He still met Malon after the events of OOT, because he has Epona. But I don't know much else about that.

I just feel like he'd have no one to really connect with, and I also had this...feeling/thought that he couldn't go back to living a life (where he was already an outcast) normally. (Which would separate him from Saria). He meets people before heading off on his journey to find Navi, but they don't share the same feelings and memories with him, and now he has to find a purpose in a life where the destiny that he had is complete. The difference between this hero and the others is that they have people in their life that they can go to, that know what he has gone through, who know who he is, and the great things that he has achieved.

OoT Link has no home, no people that can understand him, and the only one he did have left him. (Hence why I get all D:< When people say "I don't know why he would search for Navi") I think Princess Zelda had good intentions in sending him back; relive the life that you lost, but (as we can tell from all of the things she did SO WRONG in OoT) she didn't really think it all the way through. OoT Link really just got all kinds of screwed in his life no matter how you look at it.

Did you know about the theory about Majora's mask is that the entire game is based on him in Linmbo, going through trials to accept his death. These people bring up a bunch of points --> www.youtube.com/watch?v=7S1SVk…

xMarinx In reply to Rougazen [2013-12-14 05:59:04 +0000 UTC]

Haha, yes. That was why I drew the picture! (There's an outgoing link in the comments.) I thought it was a well put together theory with some very strong arguments. I was impressed, and (regardless that it can pretty much be refuted) my head canon wants to believe that he is, in fact, dead, or in the very least Termina is what sets the stage for his demise after he leaves. ;3

The whole thing is very sad though. I felt so bad when I heard it. But his legacy lives on. XD

xMarinx In reply to Rougazen [2013-12-14 13:24:08 +0000 UTC]

But, in a way, that makes it the best of all. If it truly were about Link being dead then for the first time ever a game would be about Link. The journey lives and dies with him (literally) and he's no longer just the key to stopping evil. At the end of the game theory video he says that Majora's Mask is bigger than itself, and what better way to honor a hero so great as Link than to follow him as he comes to accept the loss of his life (in a physical or mental way).

Then again, that's just one way I look at it, and the thought that a timeline comes from "The Hero is Defeated" is much more devastating to me. But also check out this picture and feel some comfort.

The only Zelda game I've played is Four Swords for GBA (and I didn't really understand how to play it, so it was a lot of just roaming around not knowing what to do)! So while I might not understand what it is about the video that has inspired you so, I DO understand that inspiration. There's nothing like a theory that just MAKES SO MUCH SENSE, and not knowing whether the themes of the theory were intentionally included by the creators or an accident is part of the excitement of the theory itself. This is one of the things that I love about fandoms, and I love that you can still have these moments of inspiration and excitement in your fandom. <3

Such a simple picture, but I've got to say, I just love the coloring. I'm sure I said it in my text as well, but it looks so realistic, and not realistic in a realism sense, but in a "dang, this looks like it could be a screenshot from the game" sense. Did you say you tried a new coloring technique? I always love the work you do, but I can't help but hope to see more of your stuff in this style. One of the things I love about your art is seeing you grow. It seems like you get better and better with each picture you do.

Thank you ;__; (I was just about to text you because I took a nap xD) and I am so glad that you said it.

This theory is so detailed that you would wonder HOW it could not be intentional, but at the same time you'd wonder if the team REALLY thought that in depth about it. That's why I am so floored. I don't know how the five stages of grief could be used the way they are unless it was intended to be. I haven't seen a theory from Zelda that really speaks to me in so many years, but this one did. I miss my days in the fandom.

The Ben thing is rather creepy, it's one of the best modern ghost stories out there.
So I went and checked out the video, it's really good!
I'm going to shock you by what I say next though.
I never played any of the Zelda games. Except for 'A Link To The Past' for gameboy.
My parents considered getting a gaming system 'frivolous and a waste of time' (and considering both how much games and gaming systems cost, and how much time I waste on them, I understand where they were coming from).
So I don't have the emotional landscape to be as gobsmacked as some were with the theory in question. To me, it's very clever, and may or may not be true. But for people who grew up with it, it must be disturbing.
But what I love about that, is how people deal with disturbing things. And we get great stuff like this .
Forgive my rambling comment, sometimes I get chatty ^_^.

That and..... I LOVE BEEN! I have a half finished DA ID of me with Ben. I want this baby on my car. And I watch it at least once or twice a month. I love when Zelda is my number one obsession, and I hope to get some more Zelda art out before it quits. I have a collab I am working on to that combines it with my favorite American cartoon (and a dear dear piece of my childhood) that I want to start today.

I'd be scared to get in one like that!

Oh no, I get what your parents said and meant too. I had three other sisters and I sacrificed getting clothes and frills and would only spend my money on the video games (it made me believe I was a tomboy, which I wasn't....just had different priorities), that and the first game my father ever played was Zelda on the NES so I was lucky to have him in my corner.

But the game is so big for such a little place and it was always so creepy. I would always be sad when I beat it because...you can't make EVERYONE happy on the same day. For instance, if you stop a man from robbing an old lady on the first day then the biggest side quest line (which takes all three days to complete) cannot be completed. It is things like that....like helping some people relies on skipping others and so when I leave the land...what happens to the people?

There are also some super emotional things in there...between the ranch sisters (that I played again last night and it will make you cry...well I did) and when you read the text it is just so real to you. Because, if I had been in their position, with my sisters, I would have done the same thing, and the strength, courage, fear, and regret that can be portrayed by a 64bit figure becomes something so emotional it hits you in the heart.

I suggest this game if you ever get the chance. The beginning can seem a little daunting, especially with the time limit, but then you come to realize that the game wouldn't have been half of what it is without the constraints.

Thank you for being chatty and thank you for the favorite. It made my day. (I worked for three days on it...no, there was no pun intended). And I am glad that you watched the video. <3
