I really enjoyed the 2011 one...
but yeah... I really must say it
1999 is the one I love xD
It's got some part that I prefer on a technical basis (even maybe slightly, but I do),
but more than that it's the directing and the atmosphere, given by the art, the coloring, the music. In those things, I think 1999 really beats the newer one.
I always remember the comparison between the 1999 and the 2011 of that scene of Kurapika walking past the angry gantster holding the Kuruta red eyes he got back and having his eyes bloodened for the turmoil... in the 2011 the scene is kind of cool, in the 1999 one Kurapika is friggin terrifying xD
Also the 1999 version is the prime example that the "eeeh it's not 100% same with the manga so it's baad" rule isn't real... that series has fillers, and they are all good and add stuffs to characters and story

(and rewatching it, has even some cuts of really great animation, the part when they start the battleship engine, move the cannons and shoot the cliff is fantastic!)
