Description The klaboutermannikin is spirit from Dutch and German folklore. According to what information I currently have on this legend, the klaboutermannikin is believed to reside in a ship's figurehead and protect the ship and its crew and passengers from storms and other threats. It was also believed that if a ship with a klaboutermannikin aboard did go down, the klaboutermannikin would go down with the drowned to help guide their souls to the afterlife, and that if a ship went down without a klaboutermannikin, the souls of the drowned would wander the seas forever. Therefore, ships made in Belgian shipyards for German and Dutch clientele had figureheads whose wood was carefully chosen and prepared to attract a klaboutermannikin to live there.

This drawing represents a breakthrough in my personal style that came about after reading Bernie Wrightson's illustrated version of Frankenstein. When it comes to black and white illustration, Bernie is my personal hero. This is my homage to him.

This is fantastic work, an excellent and fitting tribute to Bernie Wrightson's work. I get lost in all the intricate detail, every square inch is a masterpiece of line and motion. I've never heard the legend before, I find it fascinating, and I believe that even if you hadn't related it in your comment the picture itself wold have made the story clear. The piece has a wonderfully classic, almost woodcut-like look and feel that would be right at home in an antique book of myths and legends.

Thank you for your kind praise. I love woodcuts and old illustrations myself, so I guess more of my influences are showing than just Wrightson.
