Well, nah, he ain't dead. He's just been cast out by his own kind for tainting their beliefs pretty much. Velgyr had the honour of doing so in a way.
So this shard is a way for Tobito to take revenge on his own species and show them that he's not wrong.

I can't quite point out why, maybe it's the eyes or the dark fur, but Tobito seems to be from a different race/ethnicity of fluffs from the other characters you draw. I would be interested in seeing a origin story on this guyΒ

Oh yes, definitely is the case. He isn't a Technimal like Cody, Vison or such. He belongs to a different, currently still unnamed race. Velgyr and Tobito share similar traits as they are the same species.
An origin story on him will come eventually~
