I made this drawing a year ago for a visualization of an idea for an alternative fairytale story I had come up with. I haven't worked on it in a while but I do want to pick it back up. Helena (still a work title) is a fire fairy who runs away from the fairy forest for the simple reason that she is bored. The fairies are taught to stay in the forest to care for the fauna and flora using their magic but Helena wants to be a soldier instead. The peaceful environment of the forest doesn't really give her the opportunity to fulfill this desire, and her love for war and weaponry isn't very appreciated by the other fairies as well, so she eventually decides to run away to seek adventure. She ends up getting lost and seeks shelter in a swamp, not knowing that's where the witches live. The fairies generally look down on witches, and the witches look down on the fairies in return, but she ends up befriending two of them (yet unnamed) and seeking shelter in their home. Eventually a war breaks out, in which naturally Helena can strive, but further than that I haven't worked yet. I do want the main villain to fall in love with her even though she serves as the hero, but I'm yet undecided about who the villain should be and whether or not Helena will be interested in them in return.

As for this drawing it was mostly to give myself a vibe of what a warrior fairy should look like. I'm both happy and unhappy with this design. Aesthetically I do like the outfit, but I feel it should be more practical than pretty. Armor is heavy of course, and since Helena should still be able to lift off the ground, I feel either her armor needs to be more sleek or her wings need a better shape or mechanical extension to allow for her to fly regardless of the weight. I don't want this story to follow along with the idea of "it's just magic, deal with it" because Helena herself is so set on being inventive and expanding her strength outside of her magical abilities. (In fact, Helena probably won't use any fairy magic at all despite her possession of it.) I am not so into supernatural characters so designing a fairy that's both traditional and practically designed for her own world I find quite a challenge. The wings especially. This was my first attempt at designing Helena. The drawing style itself is not a keeper I think, and in this piece it greatly annoys me that her right knee is up way too high. :')
