That's pretty sad that your mom said that I think its a great choice considering most people in the industry don't care for making main characters that aren't White. If more people made choices like you did that might actually change, so I vote for keeping it the way it is : )

if her friends were on the cover too... not really. still would pick it up if the story interested me.

I am making adoptables and I am kind of scared if they don't sell. I have four characters already made:

1. French (Female)
2. Japanese (Male)
3. Black (Female)
4. Mexican (Male)

The adopts I usually see are white or Asian, and people buy them as they are put up. As a newbie pixel artist I try my best to be diverse but it's a little hard if I don't receive commissions of characters that are...well...P.O.C.  I'm not complaining but sometimes I think people will think of me as brainwashed since I barely don't have deviants of POC. This was an insecurity I developed when kids made fun of me for drawing anime. (I attended all black schools and I pretty much didn't fit in) Some kids were shocked that I never had white friends growing up. What I'm really trying to say is it's tough making poc characters because you have the racists and the poc themselves complaining and not supporting. But here on deviant art people are more friendly and open on the diverse subject. So I hope you and my self are able sell and people will accept our poc characters!

I would buy it because I like supporting diverse and good stories and stories that are self published.
I like this cover! and I think we need to start creating change if we want to see change happening.

The thing is that this world is pretty much still a white supremist world, You are right though if the lead character was perhaps a ginger haired girl and a blonde it would be snatched up like hot cakes because that's the projection in the media, even other races would buy the same thing and not support there own which is really bad in itself because they are being brainwashed and falling into the trap of not wanting to support each other so they go against them. Not saying that buying it would be wrong because everyone needs to be supported, it's just that when it comes to our own works and things people don't want to support them so it just becomes x10 more harder because now your trying to get your own to support you while also getting other people who are handing out there money to anything non-white.
It's pretty sad though but true

I don't buy comics but I tend to want to support things showing diversity in a positive light. KEEP IT.
