Description Reader: be the sea dwweller troll

You blink your dead white eyes a few times, wincing at the bright light filtering down from above.  Just a moment ago you had been relaxing in your old hive on Alternia, glubbing it up with one of your alternate-reality dead selves.  He was kind of a chump, though.  You’re glad to be rid of him.  But the abrupt change of surroundings has left you somewhat dazed.  You still aren’t quite used to how this afterlife thing works.

After your eyes adjust to the new lighting, you peer through your glasses to survey the new land.  It takes a moment for you to realize where exactly you are, but with that great big fuckin’ fishbowl towering up over the horizon, it’s pretty hard to miss the Land of Dew and Glass.

You scowl at the sunny lands that the Witch of Life had once called her home, but your heart leaps in your chest despite your best attempts at being taciturn.  You know that she’s here somewhere.

And sure enough, a familiar giggle rings across the bright green grass and your dead white gaze is drawn to the horizon.  However, she’s not alone.  Standing close at her side is that disgusting mustard-blood that she still can’t seem to stay away from – even in the afterlife.  You had warned her time and time again not to waste her glubbin’ time on him, but ever since you both had died she hadn’t exactly been giving you the time of day.  You couldn’t really blame her, though.  After all, it was you who had killed her.

When the couple catches sight of you, the dead troll girl’s laughter immediately stops.  You try not to let your scowl deepen, but as you watch Sollux take her hand in his, you just can’t fuckin’ help yourself.  Sharp teeth grit together in frustration and you straighten your cape around your shoulders, preparing to confront that iinthufferable prick.

However, just as you’re gathering up as much gusto as you can to confront the filthy land dweller, you watch as he shares a few hushed words with Feferi and then flies off into the blinding sunlight, disappearing into some other part of the dream bubble.  Coddamn coward.  Good riddance, you think to yourself.

But now you feel rather awkward.  Are you supposed to just . . . go up and talk to her?  Would she even hear you out if you did?  Like a glubbin’ idiot, you raise your hand and wave to her.  It’s hard to read her expression from this far away, but she waves back.  You take this for as much invitation as you need, and without further ado, you head her way.  You take as much care as you can to keep your head raised high and walk with confidence, but the grass is relatively uneven and it takes all the concentration that you have not to trip over your own two feet.

As you get closer and can finally make out her expression, you notice that she has her gaze lowered and a serious frown on her face.  Even when she’s angry with you, she still looks beautiful.  You try to control your stomach from flipping back and forth, but it’s no use.

“Uh . . . hey, Fef,” you greet her softly.  “Howw havve you been?  It’s been a wwhile since wwe last talked.”

“I’m fine, Eridan,” she responds, her tone flat.  She still has her dead eyes lowered, refusing to look at you.

“I see you’re still hangin’ wwith Sol, then,” you remark idly, trying and failing to keep the sour note from your voice.

“Yeah,” she admits with a shrug.  “He’s been running around with Aradia a lot lately, but he still stops by the dream bubbles every now and then to say hey.”

“Oh, yeah?” he murmur bitterly to yourself.  “I bet that’s all he does.”

That certainly makes her acknowledge you.  Even if it’s just to shoot you an angry glare, you’re glad that she’s finally looked up to give you the time of day.  However, her blank white eyes hit you like a slap to the face.  Her fuchsia-rimmed goggles are exactly the same as they always were, but her sparkling eyes are gone.  The Fef you used to know is dead.  You killed her.

“That’s not funny, Eridan,” she snaps, her voice dripping with venom.  “I really can’t believe you still have this rivalry going on with him, anyway.  It’s really childish, you know.”

“Wwhat does he evven wwant?” you insist in your own defense.  “Wwhy are he and Aradia still lurking around here wwith us dead fuckers?  Wwhy don’t they just go back to the livving wworld wwhere they belong?  Could their livves really be that fucked up that they havve to come here and bother us instead?”

“They’re trying to help us!” she yells indignantly at you.  “For our sake as well as the rest of the living world.  Our friends are still out there – or have you completely forgotten about them?  They’re still fighting Jack and trying to beat this stupid game.  Don’t you want to help them?”

Help them? you think to yourself.  What had those losers ever done for you?  It was a stretch even to call them friends, if you were being honest with yourself.  None of them really appreciated you or even enjoyed spending time with you.  The only one who had ever really been civil to you had been Feferi, but now those days are gone, too.  Now you really are completely and totally alone.

A lump lodges itself in your throat, effectively silencing your biting and hurtful remarks.  Instead you just meet her glare quietly and try to keep your own pitiful emotions from overwhelming you.

“At least Sollux is actually trying to be a good friend,” she mutters, her voice so low that it’s almost a whisper.

“And wwhat the hell is that supposed to mean?” you demand angrily.

“I mean he’s trying to understand what I’m going through and help me!” she retorts, her voice instantly back to it’s shouting level.  “What have you done since we’ve gotten here?  Nothing but sulk like your usual self, that’s what.  And then you just come up to me and expect me to forgive you for killing me.  How glubbin’ messed up is that?”

“I’vve already told you that I’m sorry for that,” you growl in frustration.  “It wwas a mistake.  I wwas angry and upset and you just got in my wway.  I didn’t mean it.  You knoww that, Fef . . .”

“Whatever, Eridan,” she sighs, waving her hand at you as if she wished that you would just disappear.  She would probably love it if that actually happened.  “Listen, I’m tired of having the same conversations with you, okay?  That’s why I’ve been avoiding you ever since we got here.  Honestly, it’s why I broke up with you, too.  We just go in circles over and over again until you get your way and I’m tired of it, Eridan!  You don’t care about anyone but yourself.”

“That’s not true!”  You can’t help but scream the words in her face.  The accusation lodges itself deep in your heart and sits there, stinging like a fuckin’ bitch.  “Howw could you possibly think that?” you ask, forcing yourself to lower your voice as you take an earnest step closer to her.

“Because it’s true!” she snaps indignantly, though she permits you to draw nearer to her.  “You never cared about me.  Not even when we were moirails.  All you did was cry and complain and expect me to clean up your messes.”

“No!” you cry desperately.  “Fef, it wwasn’t like that!  It’s not like I planned for our relationship to be that wway.  It just sort of . . . happened.  Believve me, if I had had it my wway, it wwould havve been much different.”

“And what’s that supposed to mean?” she demands, placing a hand on her hip in defiance of you.

“Wwell it’s not like I evver really wwanted to be your moirail in the first place!”

“Then why the glub did you agree to it?”

“Because I lovved you!”

As soon as the words are out, you long to snatch them back again.  Both of your angry expressions immediately melt away and are replaced by blank shock.  Jegus, why did you have to be such a fuck-up?  You try to apologize to a girl for killing her, and you end up just yelling at her like a spazz and confessing your undying love for her.  No wonder you were never successful with any of your relationships and all your friends hated you.

“What?” Feferi asks after a few moments of shocked silence.  Her white eyes are round with surprise behind her goggles as she stares disbelievingly up at you.

“Yeah . . .” you mutter awkwardly, trying to salvage whatever self-confidence you have left.  “Yeah, I did.  I mean, I do.  I never wwanted to be pale wwith you, Fef.  The only reason I evver agreed to it wwas because, like the fuckin’ idiot I am, I thought that I could convvince you to go red for me.  Noww I knoww howw stupid I wwas being.”

She’s still staring at you like you have two heads and not saying anything.  Oh, Gog, you wish she would just say something already.  Unfortunately, you get your wish.

Without warning, Feferi grabs the purple collar of your cape and balls it tightly in her fists.  “What the hell, Eridan?” she demands, screaming angrily in your face once more as she shakes you slightly.  “I don’t even know what the hell you’re talking about.  Are you trying to tell me you’ve been harboring some secret red crush on me the whole time you’ve known me?  What kind of bullshit is that?  You killed me, Eridan!  You.  Killed.  Me!”

Now it’s your turn to get angry again.  “Jegus, wwould you get your glubbin’ hands offa me?” you snarl.  “I’vve told you a million times.  It wwasn’t like that.  It wwas an accident!  I wwas just mad because you’d been hanging out wwith that loww blood asshole and I couldn’t handle it anymore!  I couldn’t handle the thought of you choosing him ovver me!”

“It’s not like that between us,” she mutters bitterly, letting go of your collar and giving you a small push for good measure.  “Sollux and I are just friends.  I’ve told you that a million times before.  But you just don’t listen.  You never listen.”

“Please, Fef,” you sigh desperately, reaching your hand up to cup her cheek tenderly.  You’d never done anything like it before, but the action comes so effortlessly to you that you wonder why you’d never tried until now.  “I’m trying.  I swwear I’m trying to change.  I really fucked up wwhen I was alivve.  I don’t wwanna be like that again.”

“But what if you can’t?” she demands, glaring defiantly into your eyes.  “I’ve already been down this road with you before, Eridan.”

“This time wwill be different,” you promise.  “Please, Fef.  Just givve me a chance.  I promise I wwon’t let you dowwn.”  She flashes you a dubious frown, but it is half-hearted at best.  The majority of her expression is pure and simple sadness and it makes your heart break.  You had done this to her.  And coddammit, you were gonna fix it.

You pull her closer to you and she follows, if only somewhat unwillingly.  Your heart is beating so loud that you can swear she can hear it, but she’s certainly not letting on.  She just continues to stare up at you with those big blank eyes, her expression completely neutral as she watches you make your fantastically graceful and well-executed moves.

Before you can let your own jittering nerves get in the way of what you’re about to do, you lean forward and gently kiss her.  It’s really nothing but a small peck, but she doesn't react in any way.

Well, at least she’s not shoving you backwards onto your own pathetic ass.  That’s a start, you guess.  And for now, it’s all you’ll get.  You pull away slightly and she lets out a shallow breath, glancing up at you once again through her fuchsia goggles.  She doesn’t say anything, but she takes your hand in hers and leads you slowly towards the great glass bowl where her castle resides.

A million questions are weighing down your think pan.  What happens now?  Had she completely forgiven you?  Had she agreed to go red with you?  Had your wildest dreams finally come true?  Were you finally going to get your happy-ever-after, albeit in afterlife form?

However, for now you repress your anxieties and simply follow Feferi obediently, giving her hand a slight squeeze as you level yourself at her side.  “So.  Howw havve you been?” you ask.  Nothing too elegant or forthright.  Oh, well.  At least it’s a start.
