I actually have a personal experience like this. I've had two dogs (one died on my birthday . ) the first one ran away first chance he got, it's not that he didn't love us its that he was (how do I put this) in love with a pretty girl. The dog I have now, well on two occasions we accidentally left him outside. And I mean outside where he could easily walked away and run off if he wished. But he didn't, instead he waited to be let back inside, he waited and waited for who knows how long. Then we let him back inside (and thought oh crap he's been outside this hole time!)
