Man, I wish bills did not exist so I could pay for such a masterpiece of art. If I may ask, how were you able to get into taxidermy? I have always had an interest in it's artistic value and the idea of preserving bits of nature. Where I live no one wants to help me get started in such a world almost as if it were a secret cult it seems. Would you have any tips on how to get started? I really dont find cost as a problem, because I am passionate about getting started and would save up to meet the costs of supplies.

WolfRoad In reply to Bludfang [2013-07-25 08:42:15 +0000 UTC]

At first I was looking for corpses, bones, feathers, animals in the woods and on the roads. Then he found a taxidermy studio and met with the hunters. Now I'm friends with them and they give me a lot, something I have them buy

if it weren't for the nightmare of importing real wolf things, let alone wild bird feathers, I'd consider this for a friend of mine who loves wolves.  I can't afford to have any wildlife-related issues, I could lose my job if I did!

WolfRoad In reply to terceleto [2013-07-24 18:19:07 +0000 UTC]

0_o You've never picked up the feathers in the woods?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

terceleto In reply to WolfRoad [2013-07-24 18:41:12 +0000 UTC]

I did, before I knew the laws.  In the US it is against the law to possess the feathers of any migratory bird or raptor without appropriate permits, because who's to say you didn't kill the bird to get the feathers.  The laws were enacted to protect birds from being needlessly slaughtered for the millenery (ladies' hats) trade.  So in addition to it being unlawful to pick up the feathers and keep them, it's also against the law to sell them here.

As a falconer, the only reason I am permitted to keep feathers is for imping, or repairing, feathers on one of the birds on my permit.  Depending on how the individual interprets the law, this can literally mean you can only have feathers of species in your possession. i.e. if you only have a kestrel, you can't have red-tailed hawk feathers... or if you later on get a red-tail, you can't keep the kestrel feathers.  Other people interpret it as - you are a falconer and you possess the feathers to imp future birds or for other falconers' use.

WolfRoad In reply to terceleto [2013-07-25 08:37:06 +0000 UTC]

No, you misunderstand. In my country, there is a "Red Book of the Republic of Belarus", which recorded bird species, which is forbidden to hunt. Habitat of these birds ogranitse reserves, in order to walk there to pay money.
These places are far away from me, so I collect bird feathers, which are well raspostranen. Wild-it means living in the forest, free. This crows, jays, greenfinches, hawks, etc.

terceleto In reply to WolfRoad [2013-07-25 18:36:36 +0000 UTC]

Yes I knew you weren't in the US... I was saying that for me to buy your art and import it would be a nightmare, that's all!

Zoge In reply to WolfRoad [2013-09-09 03:27:47 +0000 UTC]

The US has lots of strict laws about owning animal parts. Like =terceleto said. If this piece went through US customs, its likely to get confiscated because of the feathers. Even if the feathers were picked up off the ground you can end up in jail just having it. I picked up a feather that fell off a hawk at a park one day, and a warden stopped me and took it. He gave me a warning when I explained what happened, but said I should make a point not to let it happen again because some other wardens might not let it slide. All over one silly feather.

I have successfully traded with the United States and I do not have any problems. It all depends on the type of animal. The list of banned materials not canis lupus lupus. this is not Canis lupus tundrarum. and there is the usual urban crows. They are animals that are not subject to licensing

Gorgeous work on this, the setting and detail in the painting itself is amazing, and I love that you added vertebrae, bones and other feathers to accent this.  I've only painted on raccoon and coyotes shoulder blades, so it's really cool you managed to get a gray wolf's to paint on, not to mention a bigger canvas =]  If I had not just bought a white wolf, I would have loved to purchase this!
