Description For 's HP FANART contest: check it out [link]

Will probably edit as I think it looks too blotchy. Pleased with the likenesses but I'm still trying to explore my own style and think this looks a bit flat and lifeless. Also I had to take a picture under artificial light and it might look better under daylight.

Feel free to tell me what I've done wrong!

Pencil on Bristol (2B, 4B, 7B and 8B)

Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson as Harry Potter and Hermione Granger in a still from the upcoming movie: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

EDIT: tried to tidy up the shading on the faces and make the eyes a bit darker. Gave Hermione some freckles and gave her hair a bit more contrast. The arm of Harry's glasses is now more defined but his hair is still giving me grief.

EDIT TAKE 2: Sorry to keep updating this! Finally got a good scan, shame I only had access to a scanner weeks after the contest was closed as it might have given me a better chance: looks so much better than the the last version. As it was, I never even made the shortlist. Boo.

It's a great drawing! I just think it could use some contrast adjustment in photoshop or similar program. I've never gotten a good scan or photo - always need to adjust it afterwards. I think that'd help it look less flat.

Thanks! Yeah I was thinking the same thing but I don't have a program like that... I tried on the photo viewer program but it just made the drawing look wierd!

There's a completely free program called GIMP, which a lot of people use, and which does most of the things Photoshop does.

I suggest trying it. You can play with contrast/brightness levels. And for more detailed finishing I suggest using the dodge/burn brush to darken or lighten specific areas. Anyway, play around and have fun. I like suggesting this because I see a lot of great art on DA that doesn't look very good because of scanning/ photographing. Yours is hardly the worst! But I thought it could look better still.

Thanks for all your advice, I downloaded GIMP and will now have to struggle through some tutorials to figure out how to work it... I'm usually good with computers but graphics programs... yeesh...

You're welcome! I actually wrote kind of an article on an art forum that may have some helpful parts. [link] But you'll do well to learn from GIMP tutorials, it's a good skill to have.

I don't know why you were so worried about Emma Watson's hair! It turned out great

cheers love. i think it was her hat that was pissing me off, and dan radcliffe's hair that was proving difficult. might re-do the hair as it looks like a complete fail to me >.<
