This is somewhat depressing....
Good thing balloons can be fixed with a steady hand and a few jars of contact cement. ( I would know, I've done it, and the balloon I fixed held air and still does.)
This is why I would want to make anything inflatable out of a thin layer of plastic, or it possible, kevlar, the bullet-proofing material.
