We Japanese people usually wash and clean our hands before worshipping in shrines.

I travelled with my mom to Japan many years ago. I remember one of the most peaceful sounds was at the tea gardens where we would sit and all I could hear was the water flowing and sometimes hearing the bamboo stalk water fountain filling with water, dropping and flipping back up.
So relaxing...
