Glenmore, The Gardens
Despite of her pregnancy, Sorina had been able to keep up with her business through the two seasons. Whoever was growing within her pudgy belly was a quiet little fellow. On the other hand, maybe it was due to the almost exaggerate amount of spearmint Sorina consumed during her pregnancy. Her friends already joked around, that no more spearmint could be found in whole Glenmore. Well, that was exaggerated, but indeed, it was not easy to find spearmint in The Gardens after all.
Sorina closed her eyes and sniffed the ground. She tried to call her earth magic to sense some more of the green herbs. But it would not work. What was happening? It felt like her magic was drained away by some other power within her body. Could it… no, no – it couldn’t – it was fairly early spring… too early. Sorina chose a nearby oak tree to have a little rest.
But as soon as she lay down she knew: it was not too early: it was just in time that she found some shelter. Fear crept up her throat. Nobody was there to guide her through her first birthing. Nobody to encourage her. Nobody to share the pain with. Nobody to quiten her down. She was alone. Had to face it alone. Had to take the responsibility alone.
There the first pains incoming. Sorina hardly remembers of what happened after this. Her fear had been baseless. All that spearmint had done its job. Things happened very quickly…
And there she was.
“You are quite early, little filly”, Sorina whispered into the tiny fawns ear. “But never the less – let me see you on your little legs.” Sorina stood up and tapped the fawns belly softly with her nose. The filly moved her legs in clumsy manner, but finally managed to get up and stand on her tiny hooves. With her large green eyes she looked at her mother as if saying: “Look, I did it!” Sorina lowered her head and kissed the filly on her head. “You are standing like a tree, my darling – yes – like this oak tree, here”. She made a slight gesture to the oak tree where she had found some shelter. “Yes, that is your name: Aila – Oak tree”. Sorina nodded contently.
Aila stood there for a while now. Her legs showed first signs of exhaustion as they started to tremble under the weight of her tiny body. By now she had only had eyes for her mother and ears for her voice talking softly to her. But now she realized that something was wrong. However, she had no chance to control it. Before she knew what was happening, she fell unto the ground. Her legs where a big mess and she had no idea where her head was. The warm chuckle of her mother calmed her and encouraged her. “Come here, my dear” Sorina said. As Aila turned her head, she saw her mother lying very close, but far enough, that Aila had to get up once more and make one tiny step towards her in order to cuddle herself into her Mommas belly.
Aila sorted her wibbly-wobbly legs and made a second attempt to get up. Finally she managed and as she stood, she still did not really know how to get from here to where her mother lay. Her instincts took over, and somehow she ended up plopping next to her mom. Sorina gave some more calming whispering as she snuggled her filly.
Then the two took a well-deserved little nap.
Born somewhat early, lil Aila gets to see the world for the first time
