I remember first stumbling upon them around 2005 with the first volume of Vagabond and Issue #76 of Blade of the Immortal. Finally mustered enough confidence to draw them!

That's what I've heard.. :C I checked out some bits of episode 1 and, yes, lost all of my temptation to watch it through. I'll stick with the manga, haha.
