Description Orroro-Watercolor

Yes, yes the name for the piece does come from where you think it does!! haha!! Hopefully Chris Claremont didn't make up that Orroro means beauty, because that is why I titled this piece in this fashion. Enjoy!!

this is quite possibly my favorite watercolor piece that you've done so far. I love your African art and how you illustrate the people.....

I need to work on how to draw people (especially African people, I've been accused of being a racist because I can't draw them very well at all)

WHAT!!!!!!??????? Please, please ignore anyone who has ever accused you of being racist for that reason! I as a black person had to work very hard to be able to draw different minority people. So if black people have a hard time drawing black people and that doesn't make them racist, then neither are you. The thing is most instructional books and whatnot focus more on drawing Euro-centric people. Learning to draw other minorities can take some research and digging. It is hard, but you can do it!! I have faith in ya!!

P.S. I'm still working on learning how to draw convincing people of Latin decent. It's always a work in progress!!!

you're right, I have yet to see a "how to draw people" book that revolved around the minority. after that class debate over my illustration, I actually try to refrain from doing a project where I would have to illustrate a minority human.

i think it was because i'm white. That automatically made me racist

Can I be honest with you....of course I can...I didn't really start drawing people of my own race into my illustrations until I was in my third year of art school. It wasn't even anything I realized. I was just so used to seeing mainly Euro images on television and magazines that when I drew or painted anything I automatically drew what I saw everyday in popular media. The year before my senior year another black student did his senior thesis on blacks in advertisements. He did illustrations for normal everyday things like soap, or cleaning products or food except instead of him drawing white families he drew black ones. It just opened my eyes, until that point I just never realized that I was excluding my own race from my artwork. To me I was just illustrating ideas teh same way everyone else was. His thesis was what changed my mind about my thesis and what I wanted to do and from then on I made a conscious effort to start drawing the ethnicities (all of them) that aren't represented in most commercials, movies and advertisements.

In all honesty you are very, very much like me. If you were indeed racist, you wouldn't have made the effort to include a minority within your illustration at all. So don't let other people or popular culture dictate to you who you can or can not draw. Draw what makes sense to you. If there is one absolute truth it's that you CAN NOT please everybody, so focus on the one person you can get the closest to doing that with.....you.

you shouldn't feel surprised about not drawing black people till someone else showed you. You drew what you were used to seeing, and that primarily excluded minorities. Thank you for your support and kind words. I tried to show an african mostly because I myself am tired of only seeing white people portrayed...thats all, i wanted to try something new. I'll try again when I study the human form more seriously.

I can't wait to see more african art on your end. Maybe i'll learn something

btw, i go to a very liberal art school. one of my fellow white friends illustrated an african and her teacher said she drew it in a racist way. you know what she drew? A tribal african woman with those beautiful neck rings that extend the womans neck throughout her life time. how on earth is that racist????? After she told me that story, I realized that it really wasn't me more than it was the people in that school. That saddened me deeply. I thought it was a very cute illustration and after her teacher said it was racist, she hated that drawing ever since. I wish I had it.

Yeah, I just never really thought about it then. I most definitely do now, as you can see. Keep at it, you'll get their!!!

You know what would have been interesting, seeing what the teacher would have said if I'd turned in the same illustration as your friend. Wonder if they would have called it racist then!!?? hehheh!! Sad but true how much of a difference that would make, when it really shouldn't.

don't worry, the teacher severely got his justice. He did an illustration for a newpaper article titled "know thy enemy" and he unknownly illustrated a guy with a turban that was of a certain hindu culture when he was trying to illustrate a terrorist. That particular population was in an outrage and he had to write an apology for making that mistake. see, what goes around comes around

Heheh!! That PC thing will bite everybody in the butt at some point, because EVERYTHING is offensive to SOMEBODY in SOME WAY....it just is, can't get away from it. All you can do is what feels right to you.
