As if that little guy is waiting for something although it seems that the hope is gone that it will come yet. Maybe also he´s awaiting bad news ... or maybe he is accused of something that wasn´t his fault ... he somehow seems so sad and a little guilty ...
On the other hand this image well depicts a depressive state of mind ... a bare room, just that little lamp and one chair, so at least he doesn´t have to stand on his feet ... just so much resignation and hopelessness. A feeling of void. Deprived of the things that maybe would make him feel a little more lively again. To stand up and leave this cold, dark room (in his mind).
Very touching and makes the viewer have much sympathy for that poor sad soul.
