Description Just some studies of the kind I often do just for fun and practice. Most are drawn from Flickr photos which I download by the ton as reference material. When I start to make a completed image for iBird I use the knowledge gained in these studies to produce my own picture, and I use my reference pics again to check out details and colours. Seems to work quite well, and I can't think of a better way to produce a finished image of a bird I can't go out and see (I'm currently doing US & UK birds & I live in Australia, I can't even get study skins!)

Thanks fellow horse lovers! very kind. I'm keen to try this method out on horses or maybe a big cat, I used it to create an OrangUtan as part of a job I did for Virginia Zoo and it worked beautifully, but too busy with birds just now. It never occurred to me I might have invented a method! It was just the only way I could think of to produce an original illustration without infringing copyright - and my conscience - I don't always do sketches either, many of them are just for fun or the sheer joy of drawing. The other thing, of course, is that even if you have reference you've shot yourself, slavishly copying a single photo will inevitably steer you wrong unless you have deep knowledge about your subject. Every sketch helps build that knowledge, even if only a skerrick, and nothing is more fun than sketching for it's own sake, especially when you can stop as soon as you have what you want (or decide it's crap!)

fantastic sketches, interesting to hear of your methods too... I could take tips from this instead of relying so much straight from reference photos looking at these makes me want to sketch!

Very nice! I really like all of these studies of yours. My favorite is the bald eagle.
