Here in the Atlantic Ocean, we see a shortfin mako shark that is hunting a shoal of Atlantic flying fish. The shortfin mako is one of the fastest fish in the world, reaching speeds of 45 miles per hour. It never stops swimming, literally. As the shortfin mako approaches the flying fish, they will show the speedy predator how they got their name, sort of. They rocket for the surface. Flying fish pick up speed and shoot out from the water in leaps up to three feet high. When in the air, flying fish spread their huge pectoral fins, lock them into position and hold them perfectly steady to glide above the ocean. They can soar for up to one-quarter of a mile at up to 30 miles per hour. However, there are some casualties, like one flying fish, who has failed to escape, got devoured by the shortfin mako.
