Description
Here in the forests of Papua New Guinea, we see a brown tree snake hunting a hooded pitohui. The snake strikes at the pitohui, but the pitohui has a secret weapon; its poisonous feathers. That's right, the hooded pitohui is one of the few known poisonous birds, containing a range of batrachotoxin compounds in its skin, feathers and other tissues. This brown tree snake has irritating toxins on its buccal membranes. Even so, the toxins to the hooded pitohui has been debated and researched since its discovery in the 1990s.
