It took a lot of training and hard work but its definitely worth it!

Phooo...I bet! My horse is probably too old to try that with, anyway. That's awesome that you can do that!

Impressive. o-o
How do you train a horse to ride completely bridleless? D;
Likee. I know turning and stuff would just be a matter of training the horse to get used to leg commands. But getting a horse to stop... Eh. >.<
A long time ago I was trained to get a horse to stop without using your reins by squeezing your thighs against the horse's body. But the horses here aren't trained like that :\

well, sitting back and relaxing your seat should make any horse slow down and eventually stop, if they're trained well. To get a sliding stop, instead of an eventual stop, while leaning back I'd touch both of my toes to her shoulders and squeeze a little. All it takes really is consistancy and a lot of ground and undersaddle work. and PATIENCE. lol

O.o looks like so much fun. lol my horse is scared to even go near a jump, let alone bridle-less. he's such a silly boy.
She must be such a trusting horse!

She's not very spooky and yea, I trust her probly more than I should lol She's pretty laid back so introducing stuff to her is no problem.

Wow! How wonderful is that!?!? Truck follows me like a dog on the ground, but I've never thought of trying to ride him bridless... Very impressive!

wideturn In reply to Huntress614 [2010-02-09 06:38:41 +0000 UTC]

Is started from my laziness. If I was cooling off or warming up, I'd drop my reins and text or play with her mane or pet her and basically forgot about the reins. Then, I realized I could ride with my seat and legs and just kept working on it til she got good. Its a little tougher with a saddle on, cause she can't feel me as well, but she's still pretty good about it.

Huntress614 In reply to wideturn [2010-02-09 06:43:37 +0000 UTC]

I drop my reins with Truck... while cooling out and such... and since I only ride Dressage, I always ride from me seat and leg But I just don't know that I'd ride around bridless... haha I trust my horse to no end, but I have the worst luck, and the day I'd try it he'd spook and bolt across the arena or something... I ride him bare back in a halter and lead rope a lot, but he neck reins too, so if all else fails I can get control back. Plus he's got HUGE gaits, specially trot, so it doesn't make it that easy to do much on him without a saddle

wideturn In reply to Huntress614 [2010-02-09 06:49:40 +0000 UTC]

Yea, I used a neck rope before I went completely tackless. She neckreins, too, so it helped a lot.

What I really want to do is teach Truck to lay down... he bows now, but all the way down would be great. That way I could get on the huge beast without a mounting block!

wideturn In reply to Huntress614 [2010-02-09 15:51:47 +0000 UTC]

Leia lays down. I'll have to video it. I taught her cause I couldn't mount her bareback and my friend holly always laughed at me for having to find a rock or log to stand on while trail riding to get on her lol so one day, I got off to open a gate, made her lay down, got on, and holly never said anything more about it again. lol

Oh I'd love to see a video! How did you teach her to lay down?

wideturn In reply to Huntress614 [2010-02-09 18:31:13 +0000 UTC]

you start with doing stuff like this: [link] I did it a bit differently but the result is the same

Huntress614 In reply to wideturn [2010-02-09 18:55:40 +0000 UTC]

Did you do the, Tie the foot up ask them to go all the way down thing? Or did she naturally progress from the bow to laying down?
Truck Bows, but I can't get him to actually put his knee all the way down... he tries to paw at the same time

wideturn In reply to Huntress614 [2010-02-09 19:42:59 +0000 UTC]

I looped the rope around her foot and asked her to go further down each time. Eventually she went down. She's very good at it now.

yea, my trainer's pretty cool. She doesnt object to anything unless its dangerous, stupid, or reckless. She's cool. Her son actually taught me how to teach a horse to lie down.

I started working towards bridleless riding with her when she was 5. She's eight now and has been pretty good about it since she was 6. The key to it is consistancy, something I can't always do.

he is an OTTB and totally bombproof. his past owners wrn't consistent with him but i am. i think as soon as i get his body awareness more under control we can do more bridelless stuff. i ride him with a halter and rope to get him used to not relying on the bit

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

wideturn In reply to broomstick88 [2010-02-09 06:51:02 +0000 UTC]

thats good. The best thing you can do is just use a lot of seat an leg while using a bridle. It helps them get used to using your just your body language instead of the bridle.

i have alittle toruble with leg only because i have one leg that doesn't funtion as well as the other from injuries. but i have a long crop on that side

wideturn In reply to broomstick88 [2010-02-09 15:52:59 +0000 UTC]

long whips are really good aids. I hold two when practicing to kind of press on her neck and reenforce my legs. Thats why I'm holding my trusty pink crop in the pic lol

broomstick88 In reply to wideturn [2010-02-09 16:33:17 +0000 UTC]

he's great and i used to ride a little side saddle so the long whip works for me. i really have to get his jumping a little better and pack some weight on him [link]

he's so super skinny but he eats a ton. how do you feel about using corn oil to bump him up. he's a really quiet horse so i'm not worried about him getting hot

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

wideturn In reply to broomstick88 [2010-02-09 16:36:49 +0000 UTC]

He looks like he's got quite the grass belly. You should try working on getting him to flex his neck and arch his back more, making him suck in his belly, and work on his abs lol. He looks like his butt could use a bit more muscle but he looks alright. Corn oil is good, I use 10% sweet feed with Leia and it gets her really fat.

broomstick88 In reply to wideturn [2010-02-09 16:59:19 +0000 UTC]

he's on safe choice for the winnter because there in't a lot fo room to work him and my injuries make it hard to do serious stuff in the cold. this summer i'm switching him to a sweet feed and corn oil. he's really ribby but i think it's just poor conformation.
