Thanks! As it turns out, it's a little bit of both. Indeed, it is a profile, but this version of Cthulhu has 3 eyes on each side of his head so you can be sure that at least one of them is looking at you.

When Lovecraft first wrote of Cthulhu he envisioned him not as a god but an alien invader from some other world "where things are not as they are here". A billion years ago, Cthulhu and his sort,subject to alien biological laws, had to go to sleep. Now they are awake, and wait for some outside agency, their human followers, to open their vaults. Lovecraft said "we live on an isle of merciful ignorance in a sea of horror and it was not meant that we should venture far."
It was Derleth who ,unable to accept Lovecraft's vision of a godless goalless hostile universe, added the Elder Gods (Nodens, Bast,...) who imprisoned the Great Old Ones.
