Description
Hey look, I entered a contest!I decided to draw myself as the caterpillar (whose name in the movie is Absolem.... which + Lindsey = Absolindsey, btw). Why? Well.... a) I thought it would make for a satisfyingly bizarre picture, and b) I don't think I'm particularly like any of the other characters, but I'm just pretentious and vague enough to be this guy. Haha!
I tried to stay true to the mood of the recent movie, and not let the animated Disney version influence me. So I used some movie stills for reference for the colors and environment. I couldn't find any stills with Absolem in them, so I used Michael Kutsche's concept art for reference [link] Since the caterpillar has a really round face, I kinda caricatured myself to make it fit, but it's still based on my own features... and let me tell you, it's really weird to see your own face on a blue caterpillar
I also drew my caterpillar with a bubble wand instead of a hookah, because Absolindsey is not horribly fond of the smell or general concept of smoke. And bubbles are cool.
Anyway, I worked really hard on this, so hopefully it shows.
Also, I couldn't find an official spelling of "Absolem," so I'm sorry if I'm wrong. This is how wikipedia spells it.

This is fantastic! I like how you combined Absolem with your name, it's quite clever. Haha I know what you mean about seeing your own face on a blue caterpillar. I thought it was weird enough that my face was on the White Queen lol.
I like your painting style a lot, you definitely know how to handle volume and detail very well. I love the lighting on the caterpillar, especially the part where it sort of dapples over its curved back; very realistic, especially because you highlighted several of its blue stripes with a much more saturated color. You understand tonal values very well.
It's ingenious that you changed the bong into a bubble wand, that is so cute and perfect, because it IS a contest about putting yourself in Wonderland, and you would not be smoking. I think it's great and very creative. The only thing I'm scared about is that this is essentially a promotional contests, and those contests typically want something very close to the film itself. I hope the bubbles works for you, not against you.
I'm rooting for you to be in the semifinals at the very least! Good luck.

I loathe most smoke (BBQ smoke isn't bad, and pipe smoke reminds me of a favorite uncle. No other exceptions) and love the bubble wand concept. It lets the hooka-like container remain in the piece without reducing it to clutter. To be honest I completely overlooked the substitution until I read the description - it's a subtle change, at least too subtle for me to notice at first.
