Description The Covert Reconnaissance and Orbital Warning craft, or CROW, with its ten RM-79 matter counterbalancing rocket motors, is easily and by far the fastest vehicle in AMAZON's diverse stable of piloted craft.

Ironically, despite the vehicle's blistering speed; which enables it to take off from a Jump Ship deck within an atmosphere, and go on unassisted to conduct orbital missions; the CROW is not especially popular with pilots.

This may be because of the two missions, the vehicle is usually assigned to fly.

Since satellites are untrustworthy to AMAZON (They are at war with a sentient satellite you do the math.) the strategically critical mission of intelligence gathering falls to these lightning fast vehicles.

CROW pilots can expect to fly dangerously close to FMP territory, planets, and orbital assets, while using their signature antenna to gather valuable telemetry concerning enemy movements and deployment.

Since all of the space on a CROW is dedicated to engines, fuel, and surveillance equipment, this places the pilot very near those that would gladly maidify her, unarmed with nothing but speed as a means of defense.

Similarly, CROW's are put on orbit around AMAZON planetary bases as a means of early waring in the event of FMP incursions.

To put it simply, CROW crow pilots enjoy long mindnumbing flights over vast distances, and when action happens, they are customarily the first to get maidified.

Only the bravest of AMAZON pilots ever volunteer for CROW missions. Usually the unpopular duty is assigned by Air Marshal Masters to anyone whose managed to annoy her on any particular day.

Yin probably got sent on quite a few of these missions by Masters. Is the CROW hard to detect to enemy sensors? In fact, if they are concerned about pilots being in jeopardy woth these tactics, wouldn't it be a good idea to teach mages how to fly them so they could teleport themselves out when in danger?

I very much doubt it. From your description, Yin is a sailor, not a pilot, and hence outside of Masters' direct command, so she would not be subject to such a punishment.

Further, since Yin is an admiral, she might by outranked, but she's above this particular type of whim.

Plus, the FMP has a navy? I didn't think they'd have much use for one.

No they don't. AMAZON does, but their ships are more like giant hovercraft, and are not actually oceangoing.

So yeah. Yin Shin's "Admiral" title could just be a nickname tied to her dreams of resurrecting the Cosmo Corp.

So she was a member of the Cosmo Corps?

Actually, this could work.

The last existing remnants of the decimated Cosmo Corps are the pilots of the reconnaissance CROW ships, which avoided the sabotage which crippled the Trirein fleet.

This corps of pilots would consider themselves still very much members of Cosmo Corps, in spite of the fact that tyrannical Andrea would most definitely have folded their squadrons into the Air Corps.

"Admiral" being a nickname works as well. Having her be an orphan pilot, chaffing under Marshal Masters authority, works better for the personality conflict ongoing between Yin Shin and Andrea.

It would also make her wish for reinstating the Cosmo Corp make more sense as well. She'd do anything so they wouldn't have to chafe under Andrea.

Yeah.... here's the thing about Yin

The historical figure she's based on (Admrial Yi) actually wasn't a naval officer in the Korean army. In fact, he hadn't commanded a naval battle prior to his first engagement against a Japanese raiding party. Despite this, he never lost a battle, even after other commanders destroyed his fleet and left him out numbered 13 to 1.

So, I'm still tossing around the idea that Yin's actually Greenskirt who has been demoted and promoted so much she finds herself doing a lot just to stay in Amazon (which is also a big part of Admiral Yi's story). Because of this, she could also end up with petty jobs too (probably a bit more likely too, actually).

Of course, that was the idea. Is that too much? Should I dial it back?

Just flipping through some of your older work and thought you might want to change AM Masters' link to her updated pic/profile.

I guess it also has no automatic pilot whatsoever.

I still figure that the most skilled CROW pilots are batshit insane hotblood pilots who do stuff so unexpected that most FMP officials (and AMAZON officials while we're at it) would consider to go against every single logical routine they had calculated.

This also would mean that said CROW pilots tend to be the ones less accepted by the AMAZON officials for their blatantly ludicrous stunts and are basically considered One-Woman-Army threats by the FMP.

On the other side of the equation, I can think that the stress that being a CROW pilot would put on some new recruits could be not really beneficial and might actually make them voluntarily defect to the FMP for a somewhat prefertial treatment of sorts.

I mean, long flights? In a enclosed, claustrophic space in enemy territory? And after having had to stand out that bit- I mean, that Vice Marshal's orders?
The siren calls of a recognized job in an adviced society might not sound that bad.
Shame that realization of what that actually means strike a bit too late.

Curious, does that front section come off?

Yes, it's built with modular construction, so the pyramidal engine housings can be ejected in case of emergency.

Of course if it comes to that, you should probably start practicing you gag-talk.

Nice design I like the concept of it.

Of course, the most heavily decorated pilot (Post Madification) was Francis Powers.

(As opposed to posthumous, you know).

Wonder how many will get the reference.

talonofdiamond [2009-10-16 03:19:13 +0000 UTC]

Huh. You'd think that something with this appearance and 'covert' in the name would have some sort of stealth system. Then again, with a high-powered automated system, it's easy to spot any little signature that would otherwise be dismissed and determine whether it was really a true target.

Hmm... you know... I'm starting to get some thoughts for another storyline. Toss me a note sometime soon, and I'll give you what I'm thinking.

Nomad, you've done it again

This is a wonderful piece of work.

The CROW's lines are fantastic, the colouring is simple but really jumps out and suits it wonderfully

Absolutely love the flavour text too

One can definitely understand how the pilots of these feel when they're assigned to CROW duty.
Cause looking at the design speed is probably the only thing it has going for it - doesn't look like it could out-turn anything.

So if it were to encounter any FMP equipment the pilot who hope to be able to out pace them, if that's possible, or have a large head start.

Makes perfect sense why AMAZONs wouldn't want to fly it, and why so many AMAZONs try not to upset Masters.
