Description Somewhere on Earth, in the year 2278 A pair of Gun ships patrol over the blasted ruins of a pre invasion city reduced to rubble by fierce fighting and orbital bombardment. The city was devastated over two centuries earlier but remains a lingering scar to remind humans of their losses during the Najuhlim invasion of earth.

The scars of war are slow to fade. The final battles to remove Najuhlim occupiers from their strong holds saw fighting more brutal than any war before. Every weapon available was used by one side or the other. Once the Zealots were forced back into the fortified cites around their terrestrial mining and manufacture facilities artillery was massed wheel to wheel and fired until the barrels began to burst.

At times orbiting warships turned their  heaviest guns down into the fortified enclaves. blasting into the deeply buried tunnels and factories housing troops and weapons caches. the  sustained rain of fire left the regions pockmarked with deep craters and field of twisted rubble where nothing survived the onslaught of the orbiting guns.

The last enclaves fell with heavy casualties on both sides. Neither side willing to surrender, or accept a surrender if offered. Even after the major strongholds fell isolated bands of Holdouts continued to attack out of the  ruins at times armed with  weapons fashioned from rubble and scrap. The encircling forces were unable to enter the area in force due to the devastation and instead surrounded the containment zones with barbed wire land mines and automated guns.

The following  years saw terra humans dependant on their newly found allies and sister races for food, hardware and the materials to rebuild their cites. The reconstruction efforts focused in regions that had been spared wholesale devastation. The reclamation of older cites was put off for decades until the new cities were ale to support the population without off world aid.

Once the population of Earth was secure in its basic needs they turned toward the ruins of their old cites harvesting resources, recovering artifacts of the prewar era. Attempting to rebuild what had been destroyed. For three generations they labored to reclaim the least damaged cities and seal off areas to ravaged by war and littered with automated weapons, and contaminated by chemical and biological weapons unleashed by retreating Zealots.

Despite al the efforts to reclaim as much of their former land as possible there are still areas so devastated, so lawless and dangerous that no one is eager to enter them. These black zones are lingering reminders of the invasion and the bloodshed of the first incursion  No agency or nation as shown any desire to undertake the effort to deal with these regions and only when a Black zone borders inhabited areas are they even given any attention.

When bordering inhabited lands Black Zones have  become havens for criminals, degenerates, and the desperate who can not remain in civilized areas  Constant patrols monitor the borders and military sweep and secure patrols infrequently roam across the regions engaging any group which poses a threat to the bordering regions.

These ruins are the visible scars but not the deepest. Humans now live with the understanding that peace is a luxury to be enjoyed when it is available. But constant vigilance, ad eternal preparation for the next war are the only sure means of survival in  universe that has no room for lasting peace.
