Behind Cross' tough guy attitude, I think he must be really lonely and tired of being an exorcist. I imagine that Maria would be the only one that's allowed to see him at his worst.

I was all Maria-ed out during Y-con 2009, but I think I really want to wear this costume again sometime soon. As much as of a hassle it is to walk around not being able to see very well, I love Cross and Maria, so I don't mind it too much x3.
