It seems you really managed to capture the true colors of the scene. How was painting with acrylics outdoors?

I added your drawing to my new dA group PleinAir-Collective — the first dA group dedicated to artists who paint outdoors & from life. I thought it would be a valuable contribution. I hope you don't mind. Feel free to join in if you like painting outdoors.

Thanks for the kind words! I started using acrylics for live figure drawing and brought it outside for the plein air. It's been a great medium, and it's funny because I can't compare it to oil, since I've hardly used oil. The most notable thing about acrylics is that they are forgiving. They allow you to explore different ways of thinking about how to apply the paint as you take in your subject. You are not held to as rigorous a standard of application as oil (perhaps?) because the acrylic dries so fast. This allows you to place layer over layer without muddying (god willing) the final output. That's probably not too original an opinion but I think it's correct. Cheers for selecting the work! It was my first work sold directly off the easel

Thanks for your reply. I have some experience with acrylics in studio environment, but not outdoors. Have you tried gouache? I often use it for plein air. I like it because it's very portable, and you don't have to worry about paint drying on your brush and ruining it. If you apply paint more thickly, it's a bit similar to acrylics.

I've only used gouache in the studio (2D design work) but there is an amazing painter named Mike Hernandez here in California that does awesome gouache paintings. My only issue with the gouache (and it's probably my own) is that the tints look a little chalky where the acrylic allows for a slightly richer tint, if that makes sense. I still want to keep the gouache in mind for my long hikes and mountain bike plein-airs. Like you said very lightweight, no concern about ruining brushes.
