Description During eclipse totality, birds at Grand Lake St Marys in Ohio, "disappeared." They roosted for 4 minutes while it was dark. And as the sun began to reappear, the birds, this pelican included, got active again as if it was morning time.

A side note: The nuptial tubercle is an ornamental growth that develops on the upper part of the American white pelican's bill during breeding season. It looks like a horn. Both male and female American white pelicans develop this tubercle, and it falls off at the end of mating season.
